My buddy doesn't trust my 4RUNNER

Me and a buddy are headed to Nebraska for some deer huntin in october. He asked how many miles are on my RUNNER, I told him 212,000. He said his Ranger only had 22,000 and thought we could actually carry more stuff in it. I disagree but want to have a smooth trip. I reckon we get about the same MPG so that doesn't matter.:boxer:

Looks like I'll be ridin in a Ford. Thats OK as Ford is my second fav vehicles.
Really wanted to see my truck in the big corn fields out there.

Well, i kinda agree with your friend. My reasons:

#1: Truck is very useful for hunting...you can throw dead bodies back there without fear.
#2: 22,000 miles vs. 212,000 miles...Toyota or not, that is a huge difference in mileage and i would trust the low mileage vehicle for long trips. This is my personal view.
#3: Your 4runner being high mileage may mean that your fuel economy is also worst than when your 4runner was new...so, i do wonder if your 4runner's fuel economy is as good as the Ranger's.

But, more than anything, reason #1 is the most important...why do you want to dirty up your 4runner's interior? :D

Are both vehicles 4wd? This could be the deciding factor if you guys are planning on being out in the woods with your vehicles. Things can get muddy out there in October!
 
Its all in preventive and longevity based maintenance. Mine has 214k on her and we'll be taking it up north for 2 snowboarding trips later this year. Third year I've taken her in a row and she runs like an absolute champ every time
 
MPG's are equal, so that's out.

Both are 4X4, so that's out.

I was gonna use my hitch hauler for the dead bodies :sniper:

Took my RUNNER to New Orleans and the whole Miss. Gulf coast this past summer and never had an issue. 1500 hundred mile trip and the oil is at the same level as when we left. Got a few bugs on it though:happens:


I guess it does boil down to keepin it clean. I have a tendency to clean it alot. His Ranger is his work truck so the mud and the muck and the mire probably wouldn't bother him as much.

I would take off in my truck and drive anywhere if I needed to. No fear what-so-ever!

since its only you and your friend, you don't need to prove that your 4Runner is still very capable at that mileage.
and its his transpo, let him spend for gas and beers :naughty:
 
I don't know what it is, but for some reason I think I'd trust a 4Runner with more than 200K over a Ranger with 22K. It doesn't make much sense to think that way, but my domestic vehicles have given me problems over the years, while my Toyotas have never let me down even once. It's not that they're perfect, but I do have a lot of faith in them.

x2 on what ToyTech99 was saying. Sometimes it is hard to be logical when you experience solid performance first hand from your Toyota ( in this case, 4Runner ). Yes, you can read articles about Toyota performances in the past. This forum talks a lot about its dependabilities, capabilities and durabilities. I was in Saudi Arabia for three(3) years and saw Landcruisers driven in the Desert by Saudi people. Cabs mostly Toyotas and generally Toyotas !

My mechanic in Hawaii owns a 1979 Landcruiser with 475K miles on it. Faded, torn upholsteries and basically ugly looking already after 30 years ! And my mechanic friend had 60K plus of off road miles out of the total. He humbly says, " I will take my Landcruiser against any new Ford, Dodge, Nissan, Hondas, Mazdas, etc... Not because it is old and ready to be thrown away, but because it will take me there:boink: !

I will personally drive a Toyota for my entire driving life, enuff said ! And no, Toyota did not pay me for posting this:wink2:.

If you were to take me with you on this trip and I had a choice between the 22K Ford Ranger and a well maintained 200K++ Toyota 4Runner, I don't have to convince you of my preference - hands down !!!

Toyota all the way !

Does he have a locking topper? Might be nice to be able to sleep with both eyes closed if he has an open bed.

I love Toyota's but have to agree that it's more likely to have something break down on the 4runner unless you've done a lot of preventative maintenance. I wouldn't worry about the engine but the ball joints, u joints, brake lines, transmission lines, radiator hoses etc are all getting old and drying out. Just how well is it maintained?

Oh, and who has the better stereo lol? For that matter, can you fit yourselves and two women in the Ranger?
 
I would say to just let your friend drive. Let his ford get more wear and tear while your runner doesn't. Just my $0.02.

EVERYONE knows how reliable our trucks are, thats why they're so popular. Dont sweat it when your friend doesnt trust your runner, cause everyone else knows what it can do. If anything, tell him to try and find a ford ranger with over 200,xxx miles.....Exactly
 
Ok, I have read all the post....in my opinion the Ford can breakdown just as easy as the Runner. I myself went thru this-this week, I went to Kentucky in my Runner and it rolled 192,000 on my way. I just put my fuel records in Fueleconomy.gov and it said I got 27.5 mpg on the hwy and I got 256 miles b4 I refuled at 1/4 tank. B4 leaving I had my alignment checked, tires rotated and balanced, and looked at all the normal wear and tear things to make sure I wasnt gonna be stranded on the interstate. I am still in KY and I am sure it will take me back home w/ease....besides the Runner has to be waaaayyyy more comfy than that car with a bed they call a Ranger...lol:boxer:
BTW I have a SR5 97 4Runner 4wheel

27.5 mpg is a wee bit too high..

if you used 3/4 [13.87 gal]a tank and went 256 miles that would be 18.45 miles per gallon.. We all know the gauge is a little biased towards the empty side so you probaby got a little better than that but doubt 27.
 
I would let your buddy do all the driving. Hell even kick down some gas money to make him/her happy. I know you love your T4R but at the same time let someone ells do all the dirty work for once.

I think there would be better dry storage and security in mine. We're campin on private land and there shouldn't be an issue with thieves. Most of the stuff will be locked in the big camper my bro is haulin there.

Nice, you made an honest effort to offer your rig and now you don't have to take it. You also have a free pass to make fun of his Ranger 'til the end of time if it does break down. While you are passing time on the road you can be thinking of funny things to say if it makes a funny noise or really does break down. Ohhhh I have a good idea...roll the passenger window down, hang your arm out the window and wait for a bump in the road. As soon as the Ranger hits the bump start rapping your hand on the side of the door to make thumping noises. Be sure to slow the thump down with as the tire rotation slows too. If you can video tape his expression with your free hand you must post up the link! lol Have a great trip.

Well I am not sure how it could be wrong...I took the human error out of figuring it out, it was done on a website that imputs all numbers. I didnt just make 27.5 up!! I came back from my trip today and used alittle more fuel because of the inclines but at 3/4 tank I have right know b4 filling 275 miles on tank. The 27.5 is what it said I got on that trip...but on avg. I am getting 18-19mpg...I just filled and it said I got 19.9 That being said my trip to Ky had all windows down, my trip back it rained the whole way had a/c on and driving up inclines
