My budget rock light setup

Well at the request of a few people I wanted to do a quick write up of my budget rock light setup. I picked up these lights at Harbor Freight for about $16 a pair with the original intention of wiring them to my roof rack, two on back and one on each side. I decided I wanted more of a floor light so I decided to make them rock lights.

Here are the lights I used

I ended up discovering a number of threaded holes under the 4Runner so ended up just bolting them directly into the frame, which worked great. I took apart the lights so that I could get a better idea of how to mount them and I decided to use a bolt that threads in the frame and ended up using that same bolt to ground the light (so I only had one wire coming out of the light). From here I bolted the light housing directly to the frame and then put the reflector and lens back in. I used some of the wiring that came with the lights and some of my own to get the needed length.

Here is the location of the driver side and passenger lights. Note: you can see that the holes are in different location on each side and also you can see where I ran my positive wire across the frame crossmember (blue wire)

Here is my wiring that I run along the frame. The other wires are for roof lights and dust lights

Here are all my switches for my lights, the one that is on is for my rock lights.

awesome, i have been thinking about using lights just like those. Hey you didnt do a budget build. rocklights are supposed to be inexpensive lights, that way if you break one its no biggie

Yeah that is true, I could break one of these are care less. I would just buy another pair and not be out much money at all and have a backup.

Thanks guys, I was pleasantly surprised with these, I was not exactly expecting a lot based on the price.

They probably would look a little less bright in pictures on dirt since it is not as lightly colored, but when I was on the trails I was impressed with them. It definitely throws all the light that you would need. It was really nice while airing up too!
