As my wife may go into labor at any time, I thought that the more complex a task I take on, the more likely it is labour begins. So I decided today was a fine day to install my new ice link.
Product: dension icelink plus i20-toyota-r
03 4runner 6 disc in dash changer, jbl 10 speaker sound, rear audio, NO nav system.
I followed the "how to take apart your dash". It was pretty straightforward. I think all screws that are removed are 10mm. I used a screwdriver that you can put "bits" on. This solves the wrench problem and wratchet fit issues.
I ran the cable from the icelink to the center storage. Drilled an ugly hole (that no one will ever really see) and mounted the dension cradle there. The mod is completely invisible. I get in, open the consol, drop in the nano and hit the road.
Since everything is out of sight, I don't mind occasionally leaving the nano in the vehicle.
Issues:
1) I forgot to replace 2/4 of the HU screws. Rats. I'll have to do that later at some point.
2) the ice link will not enter the disc 6 "direct menu" mode. My playlists 1-5 are perfect, but no access to 6.
The dension claims to have multiple charge settings, but they are only available under disc 6.
On occassion, the artist name gets "stuck" as reported elsewhere. Before I ordered this unit, techappia (a british colombia based retailer for Canada) assured me this problem was solved.
I have a service email out to dension on these issues. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it!
Review:
-the install, overall, was easy.
-the sound is excellent. I would think that it is as close to cd-quality as mp3s and itunes will allow.
-The dension cradle is not appealing. The anchor/adjuster pin was very very difficult to get in line for the "adjuster" pin on the base.
-this unit has allot of features that I wanted. (charging options, access to everything in the pod via special menu, full factory HU controls) text on HU etc etc etc.
-the factory cd changer still works perfectly.
-no idea if the rear audio works with it, I don't have the headphones.
-song changes are very fast
-playlist changes are fast (slight pause)
-fast forward works.
I will update with any news.
Update: The company I ordered from promised a nano cable. Instead they just shipped the regular unit with the standard cradle. We called them back, and they said it was one or the other, never both. The dension www site actual says the nano should not use the cradle (but it works anyway). Oh well, if I decide later on to go cable, it is just under $40 Cdn.
The unit itself was $329Cdn shipping and tax included. Regular icelinks at best buy are $199, but they claim they have nothing for toyota, and best buy cannot order anything special.
