My Experiment: 120mi on half tank

So, I left my wallet at home and now I have a 120 mile drive, half smooth sailing, half bumper to bumper traffic, all freeway. I have exactly 1/2 tank of 87 gas, a 4cyl, auto, 2WD. Do you think I'm going to make it? I'll post results... if I make it. This feels like that episode of Seinfield when Kramer went on that Saab test drive and tried to make it back to the dealership on empty. Wish me luck.

You should if I'm getting 115+ miles on the 2nd half of my tank since I have 4wd,I'm a leadfoot and I have bigger/heavier tires and only about 1/4 of my driving is true highway.

gas

Oh, especially on a 4-banger, you will make it back with plenty to spare. When my needle reaches 1/2, my odometer reads 200-210....and I have a V6 and a heavy foot.

are you trying to say that you get 400 miles per tank?

Well, I never tried, since that is not good practice. I usually fill up at 1/4 left and again, my odometer reads 300 already. So yeah, another 1/4 tank all the way too empty should bring me right at 400 miles per tank. I have owned the truck since new 01', and have been truly impressed.

ok well something is wrong, because that means youre the only person on earth to get an 01 4runner to get 400 miles to the tank.

i get about 220-230 when im easy on the gas pedal...

I believe jev's MPG but than again I'd like to experience it to believe it since my mom's definetly not the leadfoot I am and she gets a solid mid 17mpg which is a bit over 265 a tank with a fillup of 15 gallons. A little highway and the rest in suburbia for me and my mom and I'm always filling up be 230ish at best with an occasional freak 250 miles on the tank.

Post your fillup and miles since I think alot of 3rd gen owners are curious. Run til your fuel light comes on and post your miles since maybe the guage is haunted. :p

Why would you say something is wrong? This is great. I have read other testimonials on this gas mileage...lemme see if I can find them.

Here is what I do, and have been doing since I was told by a fellow TOYOTA dealership mechanic supervisor when i bought the Runner. At fill-up, I reset my odometer. When I fill-up, my tank is 3/4's empty(I never run it empty passed that). I have 1/4 tank left (so my needle reads) and my odometer always reads 290-300. Here in Florida, stations are all self-service. I stick the nozzle in my tank and wait for it to shut off automatically. Once it does, I always manage to pump a good $4-$5 more of fuel, without it overflowing ( i have mastered the method of listening to the sound of when fuel is near the top). Please note*** this isn't good practice for any other car and is not an exception with the Runners. Thing is, the way our fuel neck is curved, the pump senses full, when indeed it is not. So you have that allowance to put 2-3 gallons more of fuel without messing up you fuel system (ie: carbon canister etc.) I think that is why I am able to get a good 100 miles per mark (full, 3/4, 1/2,1/4, empty) TRY IT OUT!!!!! Works for me.

Let's start:

Reset your odometer.
Note location of your fuel needle ie: 1/2, 1/4, E:____________
How many gallons you just pumped to fill up: ______________
Odometer reading at next fill up:________________________
How many gallons you filled up with next:_________________

best mileage i ever got was when i had the 20"s on the 4runner, think i was hitting around 265-280 when i would be cruising around. i would be able to make it from tampa to tallahassee on one tank of gas. right now i get around 220-230 if im really lucky. thats with really heavy tires, really heavy skid plates, a really heavy front bumper (120lbs) and a really heavy winch (80lbs). no performance mod's besides the snorkel and a k&n filter. the least i ever got was around 180, but i was floorin it all over the place that time.

You know I do that also but for some odd reason all im pulling for a full tank is about 250 - 270miles with moderate driving. Is there anything that ya'll do to increase the gas mileage since the prices are sky rocketing.

I think he's 2wd which is a lot different than lugging around the extra weight of 4wd. If he is 4wd then he's just got the factory ringer but it is still hard to believe much over 300 miles to the tank with everyday driving and not long trips.

So,anybody else ok onthier gas mileage. I've driven my last 3 tanks with the ECT on and I got 122miles by a half tank on my last one and on my current tankful I'm at the half line and I have 130 miles and I spent 11 miles of it off road and in 4lo the whole time and I still got higher than normal.
