I had the honor of piloting my wife's Runner up to Maine. I drove for over 10 hours with the 2 of us, our Yellow Lab, suit cases, etc.
I really enjoyed the trip. We averaged 22 mpgs both ways. I figured the MPG's the old fashioned way at the pumps. The trip computer displayed just over 21.
The sport mode is great. I used it often to drop down to 4th on small upgrades.
The V6 is silky smooth, but does have a somewhat annoying whine. My Buddy's FJ does the same thing. The 4.0 has great horsepower to pass on the highway. I did feel as though it was lacking on the low end (I'm used to my Grand Cherokee's 5.9 Liter).
Storage galore. LOVE the whole console area and door panel pockets.
As far as the ride is concerned, I love it. It still feels like a true, rugged SUV but at its most refined state. Compared to older body-on-frame/solid axle rigs, the Runner feels worlds ahead. Great driving position as well.
The leather heated seats heat up FAST! Fastest I have ever felt! I wish they were memory, too.
The back up camera in the rearview is a tad too small. But paired with park assist, it's a great combo.
We loved having the moonroof open along with the back window down a smidge. It made for quiet, pleasant airflow about the cabin.
One touch everything is great. Moonroof, windows, and rear glass all one touch. Sweet.
I was able to take her off the beaten path a little. It handled great on the steep grades. I'd love to see what it is made of in the Pine Barrens.
We took in on the beaches here in S. Jersey and it was a beast. Bald, wide tires are the BEST in the sand. I even made my girl try A-TRAC in the soft sand.
The WORST trait is the carpet. It is shameful that Toyota used soft velcro for carpet. I detail in the summer time and this is, by far, the most difficult carpet to get clean. Compressed air, brushes, and 5hp vac, took me 2 hours for a complete vac. I'm getting liners STAT.
I'm disappointed in the transmission shudder between 1-2 gears, but should be able to have it remedied with a new trans as per TSB-0089-12.
Overall, I'm really happy with our purchase. Toyota makes a great product. We plan on having a kid soon and I'd have great peace of mind having mom and child in a 5th gen T4R.
