my first runner!

Hello all! A few weeks ago I bought a 1989 4runner to replace my subaru that was totaled by an oblivious driver. I've always toyed around with the idea of getting an older Toyota and this seemed like a decent deal so I jumped on it. The truck has ~270,000 miles but most of the engine was recently rebuilt, although it is disturbingly noisy IMO. Unfortunately the old pistons were re-used so I imagine that is the source of the rattle. It has a 22re that the last owner switched to carbureted, a decision I question...

Anyways, I wanted to start a build thread because I will soon be tackling the fuel system and exterior and thought I would share my progress and get some advice from you Yota gurus.

My first priorities are:

Switch back to EFI
Spray the bottom half and bed with bed liner
paint the cap
upgrade the headlights

Here are some pictures. The only thing I have done to it so far is switch the 31.10.5xr15 winter tires for some 235/75/r15 All-Terains.

Update - Yesterday I was able to get a intake manifold, runners, throttle body, fuel rail, injectors, ecu, wiring harness and air flow meter from a 1994 p/u. I got it all for $200 (ok deal I think?). I will need to get a Haynes manual or something so that I can figure out what all I'm missing.

Question - Do you folks think I should get the injectors cleaned and calibrated by a shop or should I buy a set from LCE performance?

Definitely clean the ones you have. I would only buy new if I was upgrading. Check out Accurate Injector Service - awesome price, awesome turnaround.

The 22r is a noisy motor, the valves in particular. Check your valve lash.

Chuckles - I haven't done much caving since I left the southeast but I am hoping to do some more of it here soon.

Dont bother with the lights just get a big ass light bar and call it good. It'll probably be cheaper

See the link at the top of the Classics section for the Factory Service Manual (FSM). Just use the archive site, set back a ways.

Or buy one from Toyota or off eBay, or download from Toyota with a 3 day subscription. Personally I like having paper manuals, but being able to search with pdfs is really handy when you have no idea where they hid something (i.e. heater core at the back of the A/C section, and not even shown or mentioned in the sections that use coolant).

So today I went through the EFI parts I bought and poked around in the truck a bit which left me wondering a few things. I know I will have to change the distributor and coil pack since they were switched for the carb, and I already have them from a '94. So, Are the distributors interchangeable? will I just be able to bolt the EFI one right on?

Also, the EFI diagrams I've been looking at show there is another fuel pump next to the intake manifold that I am missing. Anyone know what this is called or have a part #? All I can find are the in-tank pumps.

Sorry for the newbie questions guys, this EFI swap will be by far the most complicated repair I've done myself so I'm a little green. Thanks for any help you offer.
