My first T4R! No running boards?

I have been using the forum for some time now to get advice on buying my first T4R, well first Toyota at all actually! So I am happy to announce that after 4 months of searching far and wide I finally found exactly what I was looking for all the way down to the color, and it was delivered today! Here's a pic of the first time I saw it in person as it was unloaded at a local Toyota dealership where I had it immediately inspected. I immediately got multiple props on the vehicle from the techs working at the service dept who were talking about how they have searched for one like it but have had no luck here in the southeast. After the inspection they called me into the bay and showed me the undercarriage which exposed some rust, but mostly on components that can and will be replaced after they wear out. One thing I noticed is that the running boards have been removed, which I have read a lot of people talking about doing, but nobody has said why. Is it simply because they do not like the look of the running boards, or is there a functional improvement gained by removing them. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to making many memories!

Mainly people get rid of them for the clearance. If you are going to do some offroading they will get in the way. Nice rig thou. It looks great.

Thanks quick! and thank you for helping me out and giving me direction during my search! Since I did end up getting one from the northeast it does have some rust on it, but even the mechanic down here in Ga said it wasn't that bad and he can tell it didn't spend all it's time up north. The carfax showed it spent its first 60k in North Carolina. Now I get to start looking into upgrades! :D
 
looks nice...I took my running boards off recently. I always stepped over them and i like the extra clearance. did you say only 60k? found mine this past august with 72k and I thought that was low. good find and congrats on your first 4runner

Oh no, I wish! The "first" 60k was in NC, I got it at 98k
 
thats a clean 4runner. i see ur in marietta. i go to school in kennesaw and i live in woodstock/canton area. let me know if you need anything
 
Great looking Sport! A lot of people visually like it better without them. Especially if you lift it. And like others said, they also get bashed up pretty easy when you wheel with them on.

They're super easy to take off and put back on, so I would just take them off and see if you like it better like that or not.

It didn't come with the boards to begin with, but I agree with Hepar on the ease of installation/removal as they're only held on by 6 bolts each side.

The very first thing will be some weathertech mats, doesnt have any in the front or mid, but came with a cargo mat.
Since I plan to take it camping to some off road spots I'll probably start with a guard up front, rack on top for external storage, and lights mounted to either or both. I also want to improve the audio asap but should probably protect the exterior a little bit before I start on that.

And if u really want running boards u can have mine for freeeeeee! I doubt you do though I like the look of it without them and it throws more mud when u take them off too!
 
Nice find and sometimes it pays to wait. Do yourself a favor and get a bumper instead of a brush guard. Brush guards hang lower since they have to wrap under the bumper and limit approach. Some also call them damage multipliers if you hit something they fold back and cause more damage then if you didn't have one.
 
Apologies first off that I've only been a spectator on forums before. But I had to jump in and ask y'all because I've found a pristine '02 Sport that I cannot pass up. Only 66k on it, one owner (a senior), and the owner is asking 10k. I'm taking this offer unless someone who knows more objects?

It's not, but that's not a dealbreaker for me. I live in north Texas and don't have ranch land anymore to go play on! I wish though. But as long as I get some positive responses I'm going to buy that sucker.
