My first T4R!

Hey, im new to the forum and just picked up my first T4R! Its a 97 4x4 4cyl w/140k on it. Tan cloth interior, all stock...for now.

Dont know quite how to upload photos yet, so hopefully that worked

What I traded it on for:

1999 323is

Any ideas on where to start would be great! I know I want to start with picking up a used set of SR5 wheels and attempt to paint them black, or take them to a shop to be powdercoated. Hope to take some pics when I get home, because after having it for 3 days, I took it out to WSU to visit my Fiance'. Ran great, no problems here (300+ miles)

Nice 4runner I would put the bigger wheels and the chrome bumpers on it. Maybe look into an exhaust and intake the 4cyl are kinda under powered.

I was thinking of going with black for the bumper, more sleek maybe? Do they make tail light guards for the 3rd gen?

Yep they make taillight guards for your 4Runner. Check out Performanceproducts.com. They have alot of Toyota stuff. As most have said, I would go with some larger all-terrain/mud tires.

Since it sadly is the 150 horse motor, im wondering how bigger tires would effect my acceleration; its already pretty bad :violin:

Also, what about the speedometer? I figure it will be off, is there a correction kit I need? my 95 yj has 33's and its off by almost 10mph at freeway speeds

Ooh, yea that could be bad.. As for speedometer, most are already about 3mpg low and going from say 265-285 would make it read a little closer to its true speed.

ya, I was surprised how good the body was considering the mileage. Traded my BMW for it at a stealership who got it from a little old lady. She bought it new and had EVERY PIECE OF MANTAINANCE RECORDED! Has a small dent in the fender and a scuff by the rear hatch that I think I can get off. No rust underneath at all, i dont think it was barely taken into gravel very often let alone off-roaded :beer:

If you are going ot go with bigger tires I would recommend regearing. Nice truck and hope you really enjoy. Main thing I would recommend right now is drive it, drive it and drive it, then figure out what you might want to upgrade instead of jumping right onto the mod wagon. Quite a few of us wheel a bit so Lift tires and Lockers will be a common recommendation. However if you really arent going to wheel much then a mild lift and 265/75/16 will be a great combo to give it a little tougher look. But you should be able to fit the 265/75 without a lift also.

Would I get full steering radius with those tires ya think?

Im not to much of a wheeler but it will be in the mountains alot. For now im gonna paint my stocks black tomorow, install a new stereo that i bought a while ago on a good deal, hard wire a power inverter to the dash, paint a few pieces (int/ext).

How much would a small body lift run me?
