My gas pedal got stuck!

I know we are sick of hearing this. I was getting on on ramp of interstate today and decided to put it to the floor because it just feels good to do sometimes.
As I hit about 70mph and was quickly approaching car ahead of me, I let off the pedal to find the truck was still wide open. I held the brakes, stomped the pedal again to see if it would unstick, then simply slid the shifter to N and safely pulled over to the side of the highway with the engine screaming and the brakes smelling like money. After I stopped, shut the engine down (rev limiter works great!) and changed my underwear, I realized the bottom of the pedal was caught underneath my aftermarket winter floor mats.
So, To warn everyone, make sure your floor mats are secured down and wont slide forward! Also, Wide open throttle and full brakes will not stop the engine like Toyota says it should:happens:.

Imagine that... Somebody "makes a mistake" (not noting the floormat), has a near death experience, doesn't panic, behaves in a smart, responsible way and then chooses to share the story so others can learn from it. All of that without attempting to sue Toyota or the mat maker!:trophy:

I had a similar thing happen when I was driving in some back roads in Michigan and went to pass someone and I hadn't noticed my Weathertechs had become detached from the holder and sure enough my pedal got stuck. After reading many topics regarding the pedal being stuck due to floor mats I reached down and grabbed my floor mat and yanked it back disengaging the pedal. I will say that was one of the scariest moments of my life.

I've done a "rehearsals" shifting to N @ 60mph and pulled to the side.:naughty:

Sometimes we can talk all day about it, but the coordination of our mind and our reflexes is different to things we don't do everyday.
I can't remember how many times a year I shift to neutral while in auto trans vehicle(only during heavy traffic) ha! ha!.How much more when I'm already in speed..So maybe thats why people forget about basic shifting.

No, the brakes did slow the truck down, but I have read that the throttle by wire system is supposed to sense full brake/ wide open throttle situation and bring engine to idle. Really its not a big deal if it does not work - We all did fine back in the days when throttle was controlled mechanically by a cable and this same thing happened.

True on many vehicles but not 4th gen 4Runners to my knowledge...

is this really true? i usually pull in neutral when going down bridges and coasting 60mph to a red light, pulling into a parking spot, but never rev the engine and drop in D, some times during downrev to catch the engine in D

No it wont. N means the engine is not engage to the rest of the driveline. It won't damage the motor either as thats why you have a rev limiter.

as far as tranny goes, no need to worry about that, shifting to neutral disengages everything. i freaked a couple of weeks ago when my pup slipped and knocked mine into reverse at 80 mph. luckily there are plenty of electronics to prevent any damage

I had my Pedal get stuck too and it was just the edge of my floormat. I just shifted to neutral right away and end up cutting part of my weathertech off to make sure it will not happen again.

True, it is meant to be able to downshift to help use engine braking in certain conditions( I use it in winter sometimes), but not while the throttle is wide open.
