My HID Retrofit Finally Done!

Yea I have also thought about painting my headlights black, but while others like to colormatch, I actually liked the contrast.

HIDs do glare a lot in the stock reflector housings. Even with my projectors there's still some glare off the chrome housing, but it's only minimal and off to the sides.

If i put my truck up against a wall, there's no light above the cutoff. Only when I get real close you see some faint reflections because of the chrome housing. If you look at my avatar picture, you can see where the reflections would come from.

haha! that's the most annoying part of the whole retrofit.....finding things to cover up the projector (nice things at least).

The HID ballasts and bulbs costed me almost $300.

The projectors were $150.

The extra headlights were $150.

Miscellaneous items probably added up to $75.

So i would guess almost $700.

It was well worth it. Thanks for the compliments!

P.S. cdoyle, you should wait for the 2006 4runners with the led tails. I dont think it'll be hard to swap them out. That's next on the list for me.

I've thought of updating my headlights to HID the same way as KDCane and iFORCE, but then saw the pictures of '06 HiluxSurf. So I'm in some kind of wait till '06 4Runner will come out and will try to swap the headlights from it. After it I'd like to do the HID.
But I like what you've done. Great job, a little bit strange choice of some parts , but it always happened when you're inventing something. I know it, because I've Ph.D. in Engineering and had invented some stuff.

i've been thinking the same thing. i'm pretty sure theyll be H3 halogen projectors. there are adapters for those so you can use d2s HID bulbs. i don't know what the quality of those halogen projectors would be though (for HID use that is).

From the pictures, it looks like the headlight housings are a different shape on the 2006. It looks like you'd need a new bumper, fenders, and all the misc. parts to make it work.

If they work without modification I admit I'll get a set. However, I am still pretty happy with my HID conversion. It puts a lot of light on the road and the glare is minimal once the headlights are aimed. Whiles its not perfect, its really good.

You have to remember as well that a lot of the cars with HIDs from the factory glare as well. I own one thats notorious for it.

Nice job on the retro...they came out nice. The dog bowls work wonders, I am glad I used them...they give it a clean look. Have you been in the rain yet? Any moisture gotten in the lights? I had that problem at first because they were not completely sealed, I think I took apart my lights about 4 times...they are all good now it was basically just trial and error for me. But at the time there wasnt anyone else that did it besides Vortec4800. But you did a great job! Gotta love HID's

I wondering where you got those micro lens from? I'm wanting to do a HID conversion with an angel eyes on my '97 4runner. Even though my headlamp isn't circular where i can cover the end of the lens but i'm wanting to see what i can do with it. Thanks

1. How did you mount the projectors to the reflector, I know screws, but did you drill them from the backside in? It's just a little hard to tell from the pics.

2. How did you mount the bowls to the refector, glue of some sort?

3. Where did you get the harness, and how much?

1. Screwed in from the FRONT of the reflector.

2. High temp. resistant glue.

3. Harness was about 12 bucks from autozone. It's just an aux. light harness.

Here is what I got for this project:

1 Pair of Black JDM headlight from Jason
1 Pair of Denso ballast and Phillips 4100K bulb from ebay (hidintregra9006)
1 Pair of used 4runner headlight from ebay
1 Pair of Range Rover Shroud
1 Pair of TSX Projector.
1 used solara headlight.
Relay, head shrink butt connector, 12 Gauge wires, fuse, fuse holder, head shrink tub, and etc. for making custom wiring harness
