Hey everyone...hope all is doing well.

I've been gone for about a month...being doing what I've wanted to do for a long time...visit the three 'animal' parks in San Diego and travel cross country.

I highly recommend that everyone do this at least once...travel across country...there is a lot to see out there...this is a great (and big) country...enjoy it.

Nice pics, just curious how many miles did you travel, and how much did you spend on gas? Did you plan the entire trip or just find a hotel wherever you ended up at the end of the day? Id love to do something like that if I had the time.

Seen a few of those places myself, Devil's Tower, Rushmore, Crazyhorse, Badlands, the St. Louis Arch....you are right, everyone should take a cross country trip sometime in their lives, just for the shear experience of it....

And you know, my first cross country trip was with my Dad and Uncle.....in my Dad's 1994 Toyota 4Runner.....how funny is that....:biggrin2:

Actually, I didn't keep track of gas mileage or cost...didn't want to worry about those things while I was traveling. Just wanted to be in the moment, as it were.

Of course, I'll get the pain when the credit card bill comes in.

All I know is...that the gas was getting cheaper the further east I went...and got more expensive as I came back west.

On the 4runner 'puter, it said I was averaging 18.5 to 19.0 mpg...that's doing 75-90 on freeways with me and about 250 lbs of gear.

I didn't make any hard plans...just went with the flow...like Forrest Gump...when I was hungry, I ate...when I was tired, I slept, when I had to go...I...went...

When I got tired of driving or got sleepy...just pulled the first motel/hotel I saw. I had my camping gear just in case...

It was fun...image what it was like for the first pioneers or Lewis and Clark...

Oh, total miles traveled (not counting trip to San Diego)...5824 miles...at about 4500 miles, my MAINT light came on and stayed on...I'm over due for an oil change...

Classic. I love it! My wife and talk about dong something like that when we retire and the kids are all through college - about 13 more years! Of course at that age we are already talking about a Class B (van conversion) for some long trips.

Aside from our family camping trips, her and I sometimes just pack up the 4Runner and go off for 2 - 3 days , sleeping in the truck as we go.

You mentioned briinging camping gear along. Did you do any camping along the way?

Nah, didn't get to do any camping...the weather didn't co-operate.

When I left Califonia/Nevada...it was warm...I was wearing shorts. On the west side of Arizona (near Grand Caynon), it was still fairly warm.

But as soon as I hit central/east Arizona...it was frickin' cold. The gear I had wasn't really rated for winter-like conditions. It was kinda cold all the way to Tennessee...where they had a odd freeze just before I arrived...killed all the plants.

On the way back...there was some sort of lingering storm in the Dakotas and Wyoming...it was snowing pretty heavy in the BlackHills around Mt. Rushmore.

It really didn't get semi-warm until around central Nevada.

Whatever happen to global warming?

Several years ago, the little woman and I did an 8400 mile cross country vacation. It was the best vacation we ever had. We were so disappointed that we had to leave each stop along the way because we only had a month. We plan on doing it again and taking more time. This Country has the greatest sites and places in world, and I mean the whole world.
