My new 86 4Runner

Well in October my dad picked up an '86 with the 22RET for $200

My dad said it runs just that when they went to jump it again the guy put the cables on backward and popped a fuse.

The body on it is in really good condition for its age and mile has just over 400k on it.

Now I am looking for a project and my dad wont get around to doing anything with it so I thought it could be a fun one to take on, turn it into a bit of an off-roader and good for the winter, ( I live in ontario canada) maybe even a daily driver

Now I need some input on how I should go about this, because I think that the head gasket is gone ( you will be able to see why from some of the pics ill put up) and thats about all I think thats all wrong with it at the moment. I need to know if I should go about doing a rebuild on the motor, or look into just swaping in a different one?

And also what are some other things I need to look over, say in the transmission and stuff like that, basically the common areas on these trucks.

Holy crap that's a lot of miles. I think your first task should be cleaning the engine, and the interior.

Yup it's quite alot!

And that will be the first thing ill be getting to, I just need to get it pulled onto the shed so I can get out of the snow

too bad its not a 5-speed turbo. those are hard to find. and worth quite a bit of money$.

I found a local selling a auto 88 turbo for $1,400, are those still rare ?

its rare if it has a factory 5-speed with turbo. toyota only made them 86' and 87'

indeed 5 speed is hard to find but the V6 5speed tranny should mate to this engine. The 22RTE is even more rare. If you find one, snatch it up. I just got this for myself.

nice find the local dealer here had a 87' truck with the 22ret in it, only wanted 12,000$us for it. it looked as if it had just rolled off the showroom floor.
