My new 88 runner

Ive been a member for a while now. Formerly a 4th Gen owner but now times have changed and I am now the owner of a 1988 4runner with 4 cyl. 5 speed and 210k miles. It has spent its life in North Carolina so no rust anywhere that i can find on the frame, but a little on the shell corner and some has been repaired on the fenders....

For now the plan is to get maintenance completed and become familiar with the older vehicle as well as start a deep clean on the inside before anything else.

Thanks, the interior is grey. The body etc is in pretty good shape, there are some other issues with it but overall seems to be alright. My main issues are wiring, theres a lot of wires that look like a hack job, and there aren't any lights on in the dash area except the gauge cluster. gonna have to get all the maintenance up to date then start tracking down electrical.

Thanks, I've been debating on whether to use the Chilton's manual or get the Toyota FSM. Any advice? There are CERTAINLY some wiring issues that the PO hacked up and I'm trying to sort all that out now. Also, it is missing several bolts for the shell. I have discussed at length with my local Toyota Dealer regarding the bolts for the rear window safety switch and they don't seem to have any knowledge regarding 4Runners older than 2014 lol. Anyone know part number or anything that can get me the bolts i need for the switch one near the roll bar? I have searched thoroughly and only found 4x4wire.com and some others but nothing with specific number that i can order...

I'm pretty sure I have some bolts you need, I'm not far if you wanna meet up next week. I'll be out of town this weekend.

Good choice on getting a first-gen, 22R-E in 5-speed.
The first-gen has a few known issues. But the keywords are few and known. We know exactly what are wrong and the proven, inexpensive but robust solutions. We'll help you fix them - Just promise to get a volt-meter if you haven't yet :)
Stay away from the Stealers as much as possible, except to buy OEM parts which may cost more IF shipped.

I do have a volt-meter. I have been searching Craigslist and other sites waiting for a first gen to come around with black on grey interior with the 22R-E 5 speed combo and it finally happened. I have been reading and rereading on issues etc and hope to stay busy with things through the winter time.

I had two 88s and I absolutely love them.
Good luck with this one.
Despite the work that these old school yotas need, it's worth it.

over the weekend I was able to get a new radiator installed along with T-stat, hoses, and coolant. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor. looks like the "VSV" or whatever the FSM calls it has some damage and missing vacuum lines. Trying to track down a rough/low idle and not sure if those affect it. I suppose ill replace all vacuum lines and go from there. Any ideas on a culprit?

still trying to figure out what the issue is with it not running correctly. I usually work on this thing 1 day a week since i work out of town. Today i got around to checking the CEL codes and i am getting 11 flashes in a row and then a pause and it repeats the 11.

Just for grins i pulled the passenger kick panel to find a ECU painted black with the number 1064 scratched into it. It has yellow plugs at the wires.

I recall there being some differences between injectors and such between 87 and 88.

Is there any way to 100% identify if this is the original engine? I don't want to get a 88 ECU only to have it on a 87 engine and at the same time i don't want to leave a 87 ECU if the engine is in fact the original 88.

Upon even further investigation using a flashlight to make shadows you can read the original toyota label thst had been painted over on the reman ECU. What i have is a ecu that has 1064 scratched into one side white tells me its a cardone reman ECU for a 87. The toyota label thats painted over indicates its a 93 ECU. Would anyone know if there could be any damage done if it was a 93 ECU? Also would they use a 93 and reflash or program for a 87? This is really sending me for a loop here
