My "new" 95 4 runner and a few questions

So, I had been running an 87 for hunting but it wasn't street legal and was due to be retired (still running strong though!)

I searched around and found a 95 that looked interesting, went and checked it out and bought it.

Had some work done to it that looked like it should make for a good hunting rig that was also street legal.

Belonged to a mechanic.
Heads recently machined, new gaskets, water pump, spark plugs, timing belt.

In great shape for the year, everything appears to work, AC, power windows, etc..

Has 33" General Grabbers and Pro Comp wheels
Bilstein shocks

K&N air intake

A few quick questions:

I wonder about the steerer damper, it says C-2947 which comes up as a Monroe. I know it is not top of the line but is it worth replacing?

It's loud.
Apparantly the previous owner (before the guy I bought it from) bored out the catalytic converter and it has a Raptor muffler.
Thoughts on this?

I plan on putting new front bumper and winch on it. so, looking for a recommendation. Not going to spend a grand on a front bumper.

I will probably never get into serious rock crawling..

I paid 4k for it, 150K miles

Don't sweat the steering damper. I've never run one on any of my 4Runners and I've never missed it.

Nice 4R sounds like you got a good deal.

I heard that boring the CAT or removing isn't a good idea. Was on here, not sure what tread. Had something to do with back pressure needed.

I like how your back platform folds up. Mine doesn't and it sometimes bottoms out on me. Use my 94 for a hunting truck and DD. Keep the platform on all the time so if I have a buck or bear they can go inside with the AC and all my gear can go on the back.

I've always wanted a Super Bambi Basher bumper. Might be good for a hunting truck

the 22RE engines run quite well without a catalytic converter, I run mine with and without one, have a test pipe to bolt in when necessary.

It will be louder and raspier without a cat, but you can quiet it down well with just a good muffler. I run a Magnaflow and its not that loud, sounds clean and decent for a 4 banger.

The V6 you have in there would really benefit from not having any more back pressure in the system! They are already pretty restricted with the crossover pipe and cast exhaust manifolds, so any little help you can give that engine, it will be beneficial, both in mpg's and power.

So, the steering was wondering and pulling.
Was having the front end aligned and it needed a new pitman arm and idler arm.

Check engine light is on, code reads 52
Working on that next, having the output of the knock sensor tested before doing anything like wiring or having it replaced.

It runs like a dog, didn't realize how bad until I started researching the error code.

Muffler is load and will be replaced.

Hopefully these fixes will make for a great and reliable vehicle.

I have a 95 4runner I recently bought for $1300. The car runs amazing. The only thing that's the problem is that the brake pedal is really stiff. I have to double press on it in order for me to stop. Also, at times the check engine light appears for only a little bit and then disappears. Does anyone have any solutions for me? Thanks!

Does the brake light come on at the same time the check engine light comes on? Lots and lots and lots and lots of writeups on the "brake and engine lights" coming on. Usually alternator going out or really bad battery.

If just check engine light, pull the codes. Not sure what engine you have, but search for pulling codes, there are many writeups, with the codes explained, detailing how to take care of that issue.

ANd if the brakes are not stopping, check the pads, make sure they aren't oily in/around the calipers. Same with the rear drums. Not quite sure what you mean by it being "stiff" yet they don't work. Usually, its air in the system if you have to pump the brakes to get them to work, but that usually feels soft and spongy, not stiff.
