My New '99 SR5 (w/Pics)

Hey y'all,

Just picked up a '99 SR5 V6 5-Speed w/E-Locker and only 102,000 miles this weekend for $6500.

Flew up to PA to get it and drove it 600+ miles back to Charleston, SC. I'm really happy with it. It is very clean inside and out with only a few blimishes. First project will be replacing the rear bumper, replacing the TB/WP and tackling the rust on the rear of the undercarrage.

Also, on the way back I noticed some wobble in the steering wheel and front end when going above 65mph. Gonna have the tires balanced, but I noticed a little play in the steering linkage in the front end too. I think I have a bad bushing or ball joints... Any ideas?

Looks good man! The steering wobble might be related to the Steering Rack Guide.... I'd bring it in or do a full inspection yourself to diagnose the issue.

In my town here, the local Midas Garage will do a full inspection and estimate for work, so I sometimes go to see them in order to diagnose a proplem. Then I go home and fix it myself.... lol!

i know all about this stuff. let me know when u want me to ride w you. i can pretty much diagnose from the ride. ash phos to JI every day, so highway driving wobble is my forte.

Holy crap! Where are you guys finding these low mileage 5-speed 4runner + e-lockers for that price? I paid a bit more for my 2000 LTD 4runner with 114K miles, but mine is completely spotless and had barely any rust on the undercarriage.

Yup, the color is a head turner to say the least. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but it's unusual and is starting to grow on me, haha.

Bought it at Faulkner, was surprised I got for so low at a dealer. But, it had been sitting there for a month and I think the rust scared off some buyers. Plus a dealer sees it as a "used 4runner", we see it as a "3rd Gen, 5-Speed, E-locker, with 100,000 miles", big difference... But I'm sure they turned a profit, prolly only offer the guy $4K on it on the trade in... Poor fella...

I think the wobble has something to do with the Steering Rack Guide. I got under it and had the wife wiggle the wheel and there is some play in one of the bushings.

Johnny, I'll give you a shout sometime and we'll take it for a spin to make up a punch list of things to do since you have way more experience with the 3rd. Gens than me.

i can tell you already,

-anti-sway bar bushings (advanced auto has them for cheap - the poly ones)
-steering rack bushings (i will help you - i barely had the elbow grease to do alone - realigning the rack was extremely difficult alone)
-LBJs (the last thing I did - now it drives better than when I got it at 100k)

It only applied to certain years and even only certain vehicles within those years.
