Stage one is now complete: Custom duel fiberglass enclosure (sub is suspended in its own fiberglass enclosure inside the fiberglass box) containing a JL 8w7, powered by a JL HD 900/5 amp.

Stage 2 (Coming very soon): 3 way in the front doors and components in rear doors. Dedicated 8" JL midbass woofer in door with 2-way hertz in dash.

Stealth was the goal from day one with SQ being a very very close second. So far so good.

You're doing the work yourself?

Is that the enclosure before you mounted the sub?

Why are you going with a three way up front and comps in the back? Most people do comps up front and a 2 or 3 way in the back.

Which speakers are you using for your SQ set up?

By 3 way I mean multiple individual speakers, not like co-ax. I will have an 8" midbass woofer in the front door, a ~4" mid range in dash and another 1" tweeter in dash next to it. That set-up will be far superior to typical 2 way comps. The w7 loves low bass, so initially I lost some mid bass, and the 8" dedicated midbass woofer will do the job of bringing those back. I will be doing typical components in the rear doors. The speakers I will be running I have listed above

That is the enclosure WITH the sub. Stealth was my number one priority, as long as safety for the cone (the last thing I wanted was some junk to slide around in the back and put a big hole in the cone of a w7) so that is actually the cone behind the carpet. (The sub easily pushes the air through the carpet). The carpet is covering the fiberglass and a steel mesh grill over the sub so it is protected and hidden.

That's what I was wondering about. It looks strange to have the carpet over the sub. Does it have enough room for excursion? Those W7's can really move.

I searched the thread and still couldn't find the speakers? :confused:
 
did you custom build the box or did you buy it somewhere?

I plan on running my current sub in the new truck (12" Diamond with matching AMPs).. can't find a single box that would house it.. unless we're talking some best buy garbage, of course :(

It is going to sound amazing. I wish I had the dough when I did mine to do 3 ways in the front, you are correct they sound so much better than normal components.

Sub box came out good. Way to go!!!

I am jealous of the Hertzs too, those things are amazing!!!!!!!!

I have about 4 inches between the edges of the cone and the steel mesh to accommodate the massive excursion, it had plenty of room to spare even after you factor in the fact that the excursion will be longer after 15-20 hrs of break-in. And yea, it does look strange with the carpet over the sub, but I HAD to protect the cone from possible damage and stealth was a huge priority so I decided to mask the sub, which is a shame because the cone of the new Anniversary Edition w7 looks great.

As for the speakers I will be running JL dedicated 8" midbass woofer in the front doors and Hertz mids and highs in the front dash and rear doors...

It was all built by hand, w7s weigh about as much as my 4runner weighs so they need a special enclosure to handle their excursion and their weight

So so true, the box is just as important as what's running in it... you really have to build a proper air space that accommodates each individual driver

The very next stage of the build will just be the front doors/dash. I will be running the JL ZR800-CWs in the doors active straight from the amp on the "rear" channel for the front doors. The mids and highs will be run passive, so the amp will go straight to crossover and that will divide the signal to the mids and highs. The mid/high systems will be the mille speakers, the MLK 2 TM system from hertz.
 
Looks sweet man. Does look wierd with carpet over it, but seeing as how you've mentioned stealthing it I can see why. Reminds me of my car audio days... now I'm just too lazy to upgrade my systems anymore. My factory JBL is good enough for me. lol.

Yea, it does look strange, but my goal was this scenario- A wild thief appears, walks up to car, puts his face against the rear glass, attempts to look in, and he will see nothing, thief is defeated... (I had both my prior 4runners broken into, NEVER AGAIN)

My tastes in car audio have change a lot since I was a crazy little 18 year old with a huge box and sub going bwomp bwomp every where. At this point I am not looking to rattle screws and shake mirrors, I am just an audiophile and always am looking for the best sound quality be it my car/house/boat etc...
 
I think the thief would know that is a sub. The idea of stealth is becoming more popular, so I would assume thieves know what to look for. Do you not have a cargo cover? I just use that and feel pretty safe.

When you do you plan on starting the doors?

I've got a cargo cover for sale if you want to hide that nice little setup

You can't see it at all. I have tinted windows, and I have tried looking in every window and all you see is black.
