My new Intake

I got the K&N AirCharger in the mail today and put it in, and all I can say is wow. This thing is louder than any other intake I've ever heard. It really adds an extra burble to it, but still gets quiet when you need it to be.

Anyway if you don't want your truck loud, look elsewhere. Mated with the Borla, what a beautiful sound that would be!

I know I know, but there were already a few posts with pictures of the intake so I didn't bother.

I've been checking on the air charger from K&N for a while now and they emailed me a few months ago to say they hadn't certified their charger to fit the 2004 4.7L V8. They only backed its use on the 2003. Also, what difference (if any) is there between this system and the FPIK system?

The 2003 and 2004 are the same, they just haven't gotten their hands on a 2004 truck to "certify" it. The AirCharger is their off-road intake and the FIPK is the on-road one. The difference is the FIPK is legal for street use and the AirCharger technically isn't. I don't live in California, so I'm not worried about that. I won't even have to do any emissions stuff until 2009 anyway so I got it anyway. If you do live in California or another place with strict emissions laws, just keep your stock airbox and switch it out before getting your truck tested.

does the filter come pre-oiled? Or do you have to spray it before installing it?

Rumors are that the none of the 04+ has been able to certify it due to CARB reasons. Apparently the 04+ comes with two filters (not sure exactly) but it's abit different from the 03 model. This is all heresay so I can't really say exactly since I have a 03 and haven't seen a 04 in person.

But the way I look at it, it looks like a bolt on system so I'd say the heck with it. Just use the 03 carb number and call it a day Not like the SMOG guy is gonna know anyway.

Actually that sounds correct. My 04 had the main drop-in filter, but also had another filter (that looked like it could not be replaced) built into the airbox. I figured this was the same for the 03.

Either way the actual intake system is the same, so the 03 version works just fine.

That means my sources are correct. Unfortunately because of that 2nd paper filter, it's gonna be very difficult for any aftermarket intake manfacturer to make a CARB legal intake

But like I said, not like any of the SMOG check guys are gonna notice as long as you're using the 03 tags

The 03 also had a second "filter" in the top half of the airbox. It is supposed to be a carbon filter that blocks fumes that may come from the intake to go out through the airbox, think fuel and crankbreather. It is not pecified to be replaced because technically it should not get dirty as the main filter element blocks all dirt.
