My new SportEdition

I've had my '06 Salsa Red SE for three weeks now. I am VERY happy with it!
Today I had it fitted with light grey leather seats. Very nice!

But mostly, I wanted to tell you about Sunday.
Two Sunday's mornings ago I was headed west out of Austin, Texas. The weather report said there were tornados and hail toward Brady and Blanco. At the last minute I decided to take I-35 north toward DFW, hoping to go around the hail. (!!!)

Well, as many of you know, the Dallas area received about six inches of rain that day.
I was on 287, in the passing lane, just pulling abreast of a car that had merged on the highway when the left tires, front and rear, hit a "puddle" that I can only imagine was about 10" deep.
I lost it. The Runner veered sharply right toward the other car --- and then immediately straightened out. I had done nothing but hang on.
One second I'm on course to redesign both his and the 4Runner's body work, the next I'm cruising down my lane as if nothing had happened.

Entire episode took 3, maybe 4 seconds. Thanks AWD (I have the V8)

Would my Grand Cherokee have done the same? Maybe. Maybe not. I'll never know.

In addition to the objective research I've done over the past few months, one of the key influences moving me toward the 4Runner has been the enthusiasm of the knowledgable members on this site.

The 4Runner and TR4.org are the best.

I like the AWD too but I have mixed feelings about the traction control system. Generally it's OK but there's been a couple of occasions in light snow (2 or 3") where I have attempted a single lane change to the right and the vehicle persisted to go halfway into the next lane.

The 4runner would simply refuse to respond to corrective steering - it's as if there was no power when I tried to ease left. In both cases, I was very lucky that there was no one in the lane that I drifted into. In fact, one time I had to take a last-second offramp otherwise I would have headed straight into a steel barricade.

Frankly, I wish there was a way to disable the 4runner's traction control. It doesn't seem to agree with the way I want to drive.
