My new T4R pics. Upgrade suggestions?

hey guys.

in june i bought a 2002 sport edition 4runner. i now have the bug to do upgrades to it. here are some pictures. i wanted some suggestions from you guys.

i have already done;
---gentex rear view mirror with compass and outside temp
---K&N drop in air filter
---sylvania silver star headlights
---a layer of 15% window tint over all side and back windows, and a 5% strip on the front windshield
---valentine one radar detector hardwired to the electrical system and mounted behind the front strip of window tint
---viper 791xv alarm with remote start

i plan to do these upgrades before christmas;
---optima yellow top battery
---alpine 310 dvd head unit and alpine navigation
---new tires - either bridgestone dueler a/t revos, or the bf goodrich all terrain T/A KO tires. the dealership put some cheapo tires on there. i cant wait to get them off!

i was also thinking about a brush guard.

do you guys have any other suggestions for other mods, or maybe adjustments or info on mods im thinking about doing already?

has anybody had both of those tire setups? what did you think?

hey i didnt know lee had a twin, not telling you to pose off him but his looks awesome. You need to lift it, then put those new tires on. a system? clear corners/bumpers? just some thoughts

I think you should go for the bf goodrich all terrain T/A KO tires, as I have those on my 4runner. I put these tires on my stock rims and looks good IMO. the size of the tires are 265/70/17, They fill out the space and gives it a tougher look. As far as the brush gaurd, I love the Waag grill on my 4 runner. Have had no problems with either. I have pictures of both set up under the WIP LINEUP thread on the fourth page, its the Salsa Red 4 runner. You can search it. Sorry not sure how to link it. I hope this helps.

thanks for the reply. i have been researching for the last 2 days on those two tires. i was leaning more towards the bridgestone revos cause people say they are better on rd than the bf goodrich a/t ko's and also heard some complaints about hydro plaining.

most of my driving is on rd, i do almost no off roading, so i dont care about the thicker sidewalls. also, i dont tow, so i dont need the extra weight rating. i do however love snowboarding and skiing. i want to upgrade my tires mainly so i can run better in snowy and poor rd conditions, but still have some decent tires to run off rd if i need to. this is the main reason i chose the revos - for their better on rd handling.

any comments or corrections?

also, if love to see your setup! you gotta learn how to link tho - haha

i had the BFG AT's on my truck before I lifted it and switched to the MT's, and I loved their onroad/offroad performance, not a hardcore offroad tire, but decent, great multi surface tire, you wouldnt be dissapointed with it

as far as batterys, dont do a yellowtop up front, its not made for it, I have a red top under the hood (red is for cranking, i.e. starting) and a blue top in the back, for my system and winch, i was persuaded against the yellow top because it is basically just for systems, if you plan on putting 4 15"s in there maybe you need a yellow top, but for regular radio stuff, get a red top and a cap.

as far as your headunit, i dont know how much the alpine is, but for 1000 you can get the brand new eclipse double din head unit, I have it in my truck and love it, touch screen and unbelievable sound quality, for an extra 600 you can get the navigation (which is amazing) and then you have top of the line stuff, I had the eclipse AV 8022 flip out last year and it kept getting in the way and when i didnt have it out i couldnt see anything, i would go with the eclipse, but it is your truck, and i dont know the price of the alpine

good lord. i saw pics of your truck on another thread, but the pics on that link you sent (the bottom two pics) are awesome! id love to do my truck like that - BUT, i dont do any offroading and that would be TOTALLY unnecessary for me. it would only be annoying road noise and decreased mileage. i would see no benefit. well, aside from the fact that it looks COOL AS HELL! haha

Wow, great lookin truck...Congrats, welcome to the last of the third gen.

Just got mine last December with 28K miles...Now with 34K so I'm kinda with you on the tire thing...Had the BFG A/T on my old Chevy pickup 4x4 and they were a bit lacking on the bite in the rain. Really leaning to the Revo's right now.

I see you don't have a factory spoiler... You may like the JAOS rear spoiler. Anything JAOS is expensive so be prepared for big sticker shock. Thay have one that would fit ours that is cool. I have the factory spoiler so it's not in my wish list for now.

I've gotten alot of my stuff from Jason B. at www.burtmanindustries.com

He has high quality stuff and if you have any questions send him an email. My experience has been great with Jason. He has even suggested some things I have never seen before on US Runners.

Go to the Web sight and do a search by Vehicle, you can look at a lot of pics...great for ideas.

A great cheap mod is the rear turn signal bulbs...Get the Chrome Bulbs that Blink Orange...You won't be sorry as these clean up the tails on our 02 like you can't believe!

the Revo is more of a road tire, the only reasons you specifically would want a BFG is if you wanted a more aggressive appearance and better bite offroad, the revo is a good tire though, and i cant say anything bad about them. its your truck, and its a way to express yourself, so go out and mod that bad b1768. great platform to start with, thats for sure, and yeah, gas mileage sucks wind, but hey, to each their own, right?

dont take this lightly, tires are expensive as hell you dont want to pick the wrong tire, my set of BFGs were close to $1,000. i love the tires and i also like the aggresive look of the wrangler MTRs however i would stay away from the bridgstone duelers if your looking to do any really off roading and the BFG muds have alot of road noise. The BFG ats have no road noise, ride pretty decent and can tear it up off road. NOTE: they do fill up with mud fairly quickly and dont do to well in that but as long as you have some speed . . . . . also you could get a bug deflector or be different and get a carbon fiber one, i havent seen many of those around.

like i said, i really dont plan on doing any off roading, and definately no REAL hardcore stuff. its mostly for snow in the winter time, and i like the aggressive look of A/T tires. this tire will be used probably 99% on the road. sometimes we go camping and i drive through the woods out to a camp site, but thats it. pretty much just use my truck for taking the crew up to ski resorts in the winter time. so i think a better choice for me would be an A/T tire with the best road handling ability, but still able to do some light off road stuff if needed on the rare occasion

It's what you want; I take my time on wet roads, and I like to be able to cut through deep snow with no issues in winter, or take on gnarly, muddy forest roads in the northeast when the Wife & I are taking a long weekend in Maine or VT.

If I didn't like to off-road (even though I only do it occasionally) and pavement performance was #1, I'd look to something less aggressive...

:iagree: 100%...The only beef I had with my previous BFG A/T was the forward bite in the rain. Other than that it's a great tire.

Sure...Just meant that it was easy to spin the back tires from a dead stop without really trying. That was with a 4WD Half Ton Pickup with LT's...

Like I said before, great tire. Great in the snow, great tread wear and IMO looks good too.

I'm going to try to get through the winter with my OEM Duelers so you will probably will have decided by then, let us know what you end up with.

yes, i already went to tirerack.com and checked the ratings. the bridgestone dueler revos got much higher ratings than the bf goodrich a/t ko's in just about every category.

i will probably get teh dueler revo's soley cause i dont like the idea of hydroplaning and tires spinning on wet roads. hehe

In 35 to 40K on those BFG's never noticed Hydroplain others have reported. The only reason I'm leaning to the REVOS is because of their rating.

Wouldn't it be sweet if we could have a set of both mounted and balanced...interchage each set depending on conditions? :biggrin2: :biggrin2:

i did have one problem with the bfg's: because mine are a D load rating work tire, there alot heavier and tend to just warp the hell out of my discs on the front, no matter how many time is get my tires balanced all it takes is one hard stop to warp my rotors and when braking with just me in the car i get a some what severe vibrating, ive turned the rotors before and im about to get new discs and pads so i might just get drilled or bored and see what happens with that.
