my new yota 2000-build plan

well i'm back again and have made the deal, i traded my
1998 jeep grand cherokee 5.9L 4x4 200K mi, 4.56 yukon gears,np242 t-case,2.5 ome lift,275/65/15's and various other mods for my new to me
2000 t4r 80K mi SR5 4x4 with rear diff lock bone stock.

my build plan,

98 front and rear bumpers (non-fat lipped one years?)
asian dudes grill mod (can't remember the name lol)
sport hood of course
front e-locker
chipped
black powder coat my rims find trd center caps
window tint
cb
ipod adapter
speaker up grades in stock locations
grill guard
sliders
roof basket



it's kind of tough going from my 290hp 390tq jeep to the v6 3.4L yota but the milage was getting really high and i was just dumping money into it, so i decided to go for a more of a less hands on sort of vehical as between teh jeep and my vw bus i was always working on something, it'll be nice to get this guy done and just enjoy it!

any pointers or thoughts on how i should go about this and any other mods that are highly suggested would be great, not really looking to mess with the engine or drive train too much as i want to keep the reliability that yota's are known for. but minor add ons as in maybe an intake and exhaust would be fine maybe even some headers, but defiantly not going to supercharge it or anything like that.

also if you could recommend good quality and cheaper vendors that would be great, as in what brand names to you guys trust?

Congrats on your new rig.

My suggestion is to not worry about a front locker. I don't see any other off-road mods in your list, and these rigs are damn capable as is, especially with the rear locker.

Mine is basically only for off-road fun now that I have my little daily driver truck. I like to think that I do pretty rough trails here in Colorado, and I have a lift and slightly larger tires. With that said, I rarely have to use the rear locker. When I do, I swear it is a "magic button", as all of a sudden the rig will roll right up what was challenging me (usually...). I have all kinds of off-road wants for my rig still, and a front locker isn't really even on the list.

are you thinking of mainly clearance modification? there's not much else to add as i will be using this as a DD, i'm adding a 2 inch lift next weekend and plan on getting at least some 31's on there with an semi aggressive tread pattern, i really dont want to do the long arm kits and all of that sort of thing, did that before and it's great for a trail rig but this is my do it all ride,
a front locker and maybe a snorkel should get me anywhere i dream of going with the exception of over massive things, what are some of the other ff road mods you guys routinely do here?

yeah no problem let me know if you ever get a bus i swap and trade parts quite a bit for those guys and if you happen to be in washington even better we do camping clubs and all that sort of thing out here, i wish i could afford a 23 window splitty they start at like 8K for a pile of rust......hence the baywindow, these start at like $200.:driving:

i live on the west side up north near stanwood,wa but am always touring the state in the bus, i do a lot of multi-day backpacking trips,mountaineering , rock climbing and such and the bus was the perfect cheap base camp vehicle, roll up to the trail at 10pm pop the top get some kip and wake with the sun and get the legs working. life is good when it's like that!if your into that sort of thing and around send me a pm i'm always meeting up with people

yeah i'm aware of the cv problem but my understanding is that can be fixed with limiting straps when wheeling, i'm sorry but what is this deck plate? i've been reading about different mods but most lack pics and continually refer to them as just the deck plate, which could be nearly anything lol yep this is newb stuff i know but like with any vehical there's a learning curve or a massive hill for me lol. thanks for the tip about looking into the rear diff mod, will check it out for sure!!!

It is modifying that stock air box with about $15 of parts from hardware store instead of spending a couple hundred for K&N that gives same perf gain. As far as an E-locker for the front you wont find one, the only option is Detroit locker, a couple limited slips and of course ARB air locker. The only front E-locker toyota offered was on the FJ80 landcruiser and that is the 8" high pinion straight axle not IFS.

For Tires if you are doing any lift go with the 265/75 16 or if you have 15" rims then a 32" tire it wont be much different then the 31 on the road but will be noticeable off road.

hey thats some real good info there i was wondering why people were swapping the jeep's dana 35's and 40 series front axles into these things
do you think you could also use a ford 8' in the front as well? don;t those have the removable third member? that would be kind of cool! i like your thinking on the tire sizes, yeah about this deck plate mod, i had the fipk second gen on my jeep and noticed that more dirt was getting sucked into the draft tube than it was before stock that's why i was just thinking chipping it, i want 300K out of my ride, i know this is a different beast, so has anyone noticed any draw backs to the deck plate mod?

Have you though about an ARB or Shrockworks bumper for the front instead of the 96-98 bumper? You seem pretty clued up on the off-road stuff, but I would say body armor is a better way to spend the $$ rather than a front locker.

yeah your right, i was thinking about this over lunch today, i need to do the armor thing first and then start working on the 4x4 mods,yeah not a fan of the mech lockers like Detroit or whatnot esp. on a DD rig so an arb it is, and as far as bumpers go what do you guys think about teh extra weight on the springs and engine? do they guys out there with them notice any difference? i know on some vehicles stiffer springs are recommended and also notice any power lose?

i'm thinking a 98 bumper with a westing welded in and some d-ring brackets welded to the frame, as that stuff will be hidden.


which made me think of another question, approach angles, do how much better of an approach angle do you get from an arb.... oh and thanks for the shockworks name the only companies i know for yota are arb...as most of the jeep stuff i played with was all custom, from companies like iceland off road,kolak and guys like that.

Even though you mentioned not doing it, if you are considering headers for your 4runner, I would recommend you look into a supercharger first. IMO, installing a supercharger with a 7th injector is much easier than installing headers for this rig. You'll get a big boost in HP and you'll still have the same reliability.

OK my opinion on Sliders is All Pro Offroad. You can find them at Allpro off-road.com, also check Bud built, Irbis off road, Stubs sliders, Toytech off road, Sonoran Steel. You can see some pics of my truck on a couple threads. Phase 2 bumper build complete I think is one of the more recent ones. you can PM me if you have questions about my ride. there are several far more knowledgeable people on here then me but i have a pretty well rounded basic knowledge.
