My next 4Runner (kind of)

Mast antenna, funky bug eyed taillights and down-right random interior of 2010 Runner is just not doing it for me. Being loyal to Toyota I'm going with 2011 GX from Lexus which is based on 2010 Runner. I'm sure it'll have V-8, in-glass antenna, sleek interior and no useless roofrack. Here are some pics:

Only one problem with the GX460 -- MSRP is going to start around $50k and you'll be able to run it up to $55k very easily. Out of my price range, unfortunately.

Even with Camo its looking alot more like what I want to see, raked windshield, sculpted bumpers, some depth and muscle to the flanks and wheel arches, an evolution of what they had ya know, kind of like what would would have wanted to see in the 4R... oh well.

I can see myself going for broke to get a new GX, campbells soup cant be that bad!

Search for an earlier thread about the Prado (Toy version of GX) pictured above. The wraps are off and it's already released on the Toyota Japan website.

Putting the old GX next to a Prado reveals more differences than you initially think in body mouldings, grill, interior features etc.

I think there will be larger difference in design between the two in the new model as far as the clip on trims and covers go anyway, starting with the obvious, a much larger grill.

Compare and LC100 to old LX470, then New LC200 vs new LX570 which shows a noticably different vehicle, with entirely different dashboard and interior fittings. So the Prado's dashboard may not be the same as the new GX, any thoughts?

The best thing about the upcoming Prado/GX is that from looking at the pics in the old thread (in the GX subforum) it looks to me like the rear hatch glass can be opened upwards and is no longer fixed in place (the achille's heel of my GX470 IMO). The door is stil a barn door design but at least the stupid glass can be opened so you can carry some long cargo on occassion.

I'm not sure but from the pics I've seen it looks like it's still a barn door but now with a seperately opening rear glass hatch, kind of like on the 2nd generation Honda CR-V. I think the FJ also has this type design.

problem with this is that it doesnt come in stick and you might as well get a real luxury suv unless you want a rebadged toyota (LC prado). atleast the prado has a proper manual gearbox.

What SUV can you get in the US with a stick?

While I prefer driving a stick on the road, offroad I greatly prefer an automatic -- easier to start up in sand without digging in, and easier to ease your way up over rocks without giving it too much gas, or slipping the clutch. YMMV.

The Lexus is likely what I'm going to go with (if I don't decide to keep buy 4th Gen and buy a 2nd car) and if I like it. The rear door is what I never liked about it, but to be honest, little kids can have a tough time with the 4Runner door.

If it's got the V8 and the A/C blowing seats, I'll be all over it.

i completly understand you POV on stick offroad.

And you can't get much here in stick SUV's anymore. But thats the problem, the SUV is market followed mostly by women (atleast in america), and not to be an a$$ or anything, but most women don't know how to drive stick or don't want to drive stick, (i also know many men dont want to or know how to ethier). Thats kind of upsetting because i know you can get the LR3 in stick in europe along the with toyota SUV's and all.

I don't think it's just a woman thing not being able to drive a stick as much as it's becoming a generational thing since more and more families don't even own manuals anymore and their kids grow up learning to drive autos only. It's almost becoming a lost art form if you will.:ybrick:

yeah, i hear that. My parents made sure i knew had to drive stick incase i needed to drive a friends car out of a sticky situation. Sticks can't dissappear because of the MPG's they put out.

Someone should write the White House and calculate energy savings if they taught stick driving in school (and assume people bought it).

The issue is if you live in cities and sit in traffic jams a lot - automatic is nice

In regards to this thread. I agree with the first post. If the GX was available now we would have bought it. I tested the 09 and can't put down that much money for something that is that outdated. In addition the nav system doesn't work up here in Alaska (new one might have hard-drive instead which will have maps for Alaska).

Can't wait though so getting the 4runner 2010. Maybe GX next time

As much as I hate to admit it, now that I've seen the 5th gen 4Runner, I'm kind of wishing that the Highlander was the new bodystyle for the 5th gen. Sure, it's "softer" than the new 4Runner, but if it had the capability and wasn't basically a unibody front drive chassis, I'd be all over it as a future replacement for my 4th gen 4Runner. At least the Highlander is somewhat decent looking...

Automatics are catching up and have even caught up/surpassed manuals in some vehicles when it comes to fuel economy/energy savings. I just got a new G37 coupe with a 6-speed manual transmission. The automatic version of the G37 coupe comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission that gives it even better gas mileage than my 6-speed manual. As conventional automatics continue to get more gear ratios, they are only going to become even more fuel efficient.... which makes me wonder if/when we'll see a 7-speed manual transmission. I'm not sure if that will happen or not because manual transmissions seem to be a dying breed.
