My next vehicle?

Im pretty clueless as to what my next vehicle will be, Im only posting here because I used to be a part of this forum.

I have owned a 4wd lifted 2007 frontier, 97 4runner, and a 98 Land Rover.

I loved the 4runner because it always worked.
I loved the Land Rover for looks, offroad ability, solid front axle wheelbase etc. untill I sunk it

Now I have no clue what I will be getting towards the end of the year.

My price range is anywhere from 5k-25k
heres what Im considering


3rd Gen 4runner
4th Gen 4runner
5th Gen 4runner [doubt it]

2004 Land RoverDiscovery

DC Tacoma 1st or 2nd Gen

Sequoia

Fj Cruiser.

My first love is the Land Rover, and all my friends agree "it fits me" but I want something reliable, land rovers arent really unreliable, its the electronics that screw them up.

My beefs with it are, its a 1960's buick 4.6 v8 premium gas guzzler with NO power [3.4 v6 4runner was faster] with a horrible engine management system

Im considering a truck this time especially seeing the great gas mileage the 4.0 tacomas get. I always thought the 1st gens were FUGLY but if I try hard enough I could make myself like them

The 4th gen 4runners are pretty ugly [to me] so Im leaning towards a 3rd or 5th gen.

FJs have short wheebases, but 0 visibility [something I loved about my LR] and 2 half ass doors

and finally Sequoia, which is the biggest and I just considered today.


Any help/discussion is appreciated.

The 2009+ Tacomas are really nice (after the mid-gen refresh). Those and the 3rd gen 4runner are my favorites on your list. I had a 1st gen Taco Double cab, it was a great truck!

But the 2nd gen Tacoma Double Cab Short Bed are by far my favorite!

He mentioned reliable so that negates a Jeep and also the Disco. Now if he wanted capable and solid axle I would say sure why not a Jeep. I would say a 3rd Gen or even a 4th Gen. with factory bumpers they arent the best looking but put some bumpers and a rack on a 4th Gen and they arent bad looking at all.

I would play a game of process of elimination:

-The Discovery sounds out for reliability reasons
-4th gen 4Runner sounds out based on aesthetics
-5th gen 4Runner sounds out based on price
-FJ sounds sort of out based on ergonomics
-Sequoia I would put out simply on the size

So that leaves the 1st and 2nd gen Tacoma and the 3rd gen 4Runner. Do you want to use the bed of the truck? One reason I didn't buy a 1st gen DC Tacoma was that I felt the 5ft bed was sort of worthless as a truck bed. It sort of sounds like the 2nd gen Tacoma DC would be the best fit for all of your needs, but I wouldn't argue much against a 3rd gen 4Runner.

Thanks, discovery is still hanging on, by some miracle [sexyness and cheapness plus i know them inside and out.]

Iactually would love a smaller bed [less rear overhang] still at 128" the tacoma is quite long [wheelbase] im not sure if id ever use the bed! or if i would have prefered a 4runner.

As for the 4runner, Im going to look at some for sale. If there priced too high for the condition I want Its out. Im not paying close to 10k for a 14year old truck.

I owned a 1st gen DC Tacoma, and I liked it a lot. I think the bed size was manageable, and it holds more stuff than a 4Runner even if you're keeping the 4runner's seats folded down; all while seating 4 comfortably.

A 2nd gen DC is a nice ride, but consider finding one used with low miles while still allowing a budget to do some mods to it, and it gets expensive real quick.

Can't go wrong with a 3rd gen T4R either though. They're cheaper than a 4 dr Tacoma, just comes down to wether or not you really need the bed or not.

04 Disco if you want another V8 gas guzzler, i love the ride in my moms 04, she has the "trail edition" which gives some ladders and black bumpers, and its cool. I think cause you already like the disco its a good option, Im not sure i would buy a disco just cause im not interested in 14mpg, but if your good with that then by all means get one! BTW the disco is a little ahead of the game offroad in many people's eyes because it already has solid front and rear axles, so no broken CV's!

And the 4.6l V8 runs just fine on regular! and its a bit of a variation from the 1960's buick alum block V8 they started with, its bored out to 4.6l, has a sh!ton of torque, and is fuel injected.

I say Second Gen Taco! I love those rigs! If I had the money...I'd sell my Impala....and buy that That Taco!

I vote no on the Land Rover, strickly for its horrible rep being unreliable. As you can see in the above picture, it is all set being ready for the tow truck to hook up the front end on the way to the shop. :jk:

Land Rovers have nice styling and classic looks, but they still haven't backed those features up with a decent powerplant and electronics.

The Tacos are really nice, but always seem to be slightly behind the runner in interior comfort and amenities. You said don't really have a use for a pickup, so that right there should tell you not to get one. You'll miss the enclosed cargo area if that's what you're used to. Sexy truck though.

No explanation necessary here.

Sequoia? Well, if you have a bunch of kids on traveling soccer teams :tongue:.

If you want something reliable don't even think of the Disco I or II. From my personal experience all those Rover V8's do are go through head gaskets and perform like a Toyota V6 (maybe even less performance) while using more fuel in the process. The LR3 on the other hand, from my experience is pretty nice, solidly built, and reliable but not in your price range.

Have you considered the 1st Gen Tundra? Bigger than a 1st Gen Taco but more power than the 2nd Gen Taco and similar size.
