I am not disagreeing with you per se, looking at it from the businesses viewpoint I can understand the posture.
My brother owned a garage door company. He only installed top of the line LiftMaster openers. At a fair price - lets say $50 more than the LiftMaster you can buy at Lowes (which is NOT the same opener - the big box editions are definitely a step down from what a licensed installer gets. Different part number, different drive motor, etc.. In other words Lowes says to it's suppliers "Here is our price point. Make it work if you want to sell huge volumes to us.").
Lady calls him up for a new door and opener but says I bought an opener at Lowes because it was $50 cheaper than what you offer. My brother says fine, we'll install it but I won't warranty it.
A year later the opener stops working, she calls my brother up and says I want you to come replace it under warranty. He can't because it's not his opener, it's from Lowes. Lady gets pissed and beats him up on Yelp.
Thats why businesses have the rule. ;-)
Funny you say this. I have a garage door business myself and run into the exact same thing. I make sure I am understood upfront. If they ask me if I will install one they bought, I say sure, It's going to be x amount, and if there is any issues that you want taken care under warranty it's your responsibility to get the parts from the manufacturer and you will be charged with labor. You have to spell it out for people these days, and get it in writing.
