My Pet Barrier Solution

So, I like to give my dogs the entire back end with the second seat folded down.
After looking at the solutions out there I ended up with (Photo 1):
Safari Straps - 2" Cargo Net - Medium 52-2520 for $45.00.
This size seems to fit pretty good.
The top is fastened to the rear Grab Handles with the straps supplied then to a "D" ring (I removed from the rear) to the Driver Grab handle mount with an extra strap (Photo 3 & 4). The Passenger side is the same with the exception the second strap is hooked to the Grab Handle.
The bottom straps are hooked around the outside FRONT seat mount.This should also be workable behind the second seat.

Great idea! Looks to be easy to set up and remove when needed too. I have a great dane that takes up the entire cargo area and when I travel most weekends I really worry about him (and myself) if I got into an accident.

I've looked into those and wonder how secure they really are. I watched a video one time about the safety in seat belts. The driver, front seat passenger and one back seat passenger were buckled in, the 2nd back seat passenger was not. The car got into a pretty awful accident and because that one back seat passenger wasn't buckled he flew around that car and ended up killing everyone in it, including himself.
My Great Dane weighs as much as an adult and if that thing isn't secure I could see it doing no good.

Pet Barrier

I purchased a heavy duty "pet-barrier net" for my 4th Generation 4Runner from Raingler.

It 'was' pretty slick and worked well...until my jack russell terrier decided to chew through it...

I have used the Walmart type before and could never get it secure enough. The problem is to get it secure enough to withstand any force your headliner will be permanently ruined. It is also not easy to store, this one fits under the seat.

I also looked at the Raingler, not much different and they are much more expensive.

very cool option! right now i have both a pressure fit style one and an elastic net to choose from, but i really like the looks of this thing!

Where did you get the D-rings? I know you can get them from the Stealership but I've heard they are stupid expensive.

I used one from the rear cargo area. In mine there are 4 in the back, since they are not used there, I won't miss them.

Safari Straps also sells chrome ones for 75 cents.

For those like Mtoy4 still looking for a solution. For a lot less money and increased convenience IMO, consider a simple custom strap with snap hooks on both ends. We did this for our GSP, may she R.I.P. Anyway, ordered up a custom strap from strapworks.com and combined it with a walking harness we already had. Adjust the strap to the desired length, short enough to keep her from trying to climb over the back seat, but she still had plenty of slack to move around/circles/stand...clip one end to the harness, the other to a cargo D-ring. Instantly transformed her from a very nervous passenger to a car dog.

I've actually thought of something like this, but here's my issue with that... I'm anal about dog hair in my 4runner. It's fine when it's in the cargo area, well really it's not, but it's to be expected, but I don't like it when it's between the head rests of the 2nd row seating or on the headliner. If I have people riding with me the last thing I want is dog hair issues. So with as big of a dog as he is, he'd still be able to move about and hair up my seats.

Neither situation would be a problem if the strap lengths are adjusted properly using the rear most D-rings.

Terri, if you don't want dog hair drifting from the cargo bay into the passenger area, you'll either need to shave the dog or place a solid, air tight barrier between the cargo bay and passengers. Whether the dog can reach the top of the 2nd row back rest or not, its hair will eventually find its way all over the cabin...subject to a thorough vacuuming after each dog trip, which may not be practical depending on how frequently that is. Hair comes with being a dog owner...you just deal with it or pick your breed carefully if you can't.

I prefer to wait until there is enough hair that it forms a new interior in the back seat, then I can just grab a corner and peel it out. I've got a chocolate and a yellow lab so I've long since given up on vacuuming up all the hair as it is impossible. If a passenger has a problem with some hair on the seat they can walk.
I do like the barrier idea though. For whatever reason my chocolate lab has issues with cattle guards and tries to climb into my wife's lap.

I wish I could do that. Alex's (my Dane) hairs are so tiny and they needle their way into the fabric. I have to vacuum them and then sit and pick out the ones that the vacuum doesn't get. I know, anal

I also have a dane and keep her in the rear area only back seat NOT folded. I use this barrier I got off amazon and it works perfectly! Adjust to the right lengths up and down and left to right. Also with the barrier attached to the rear headrests people can still put their heads on the headrests and they dont hit the barrier with their heads. I think if she wanted she could break it down, but I think she could break any pet barrier made since shes so big.
