My stereo JBL or not?

Is it possible to cheaply upgrade to the JBL system without going aftermarket?
JBL is a POS, go after market. A new HU alone will DRASTICALLY improve SQ.
My JBL sounds good enough, but I'm no audiophile by any means. Better than the non-JBL, imho.
As far as I know the upgrade wouldnt be easy as you'd need to replace your rear backup mirrors with speakers, put the subwoofer in the rear, and install the center channel in the middle of the dash.
If I were you, I'd look into fitting a Scion headunit and upgrading your speakers.

Scion head units fit the 4runners?
The 4th Gen 4Runner is one of the few models that has a standard size double-DIN radio without a fancy faceplate, so it could be interchangeable with other Toyota head units. You'd have to verify that the wiring is the same if you want it to be a plug-and-play replacement.
I agree with the other comments about aftermarket. You'll get a LOT more features for your money with an aftermarket unit as opposed to the factory offerings. I'm no audiophile - the stock systems sound fine to me - but I like features in the aftermarket units like DVD playback (fill up a DVD with MP3's for 6 times as much as a CD), USB input, and even Bluetooth for a reasonable price. Many units are compatible with the steering wheel controls, although making that work takes a little bit of splicing into the factory wiring behind the dash.

Yeap -- they may be a little on the pricey side (unless you find them second hand), but some of the fancier ones retain a semi-stock toyota look (aside from the "Scion" label), and offer a lot more features than the stock toyota units do. There's a couple writeups here and on toyota120 I think -- some Googling should show you.
I just added an iPod interface to my JBL and I'm happy with it though.
I big reason I didnt go aftermarket is the 4Runner has a dash that's sort of tough to match with an aftermarket headunit, in my opinon you'd sort of detract from the interior aesthetically. The Scion units still match well.

I just bought a Rosen unit, as I wanted the navigation piece, havent got it yet so I think ill install it next week, also doing the steering wheel mod also for the hands free operation...and i also picked up the Ipod adapter as well..

Nice.. where did you buy it from? When I bought mt rosen for my bonds, I got it from" abetterwaytobuy" and this guy had killer prices
hey there. i have an 08 urbanrunner and i got toyota to put in an avic-z3 to replace the crappy tomtom headunit. i believe they used the fj-cruisers mounting plastic piece and a swi-pak(or something like that) for the steering wheel controls and stuff. i think they did a pretty decent job, but im a car noob.

Dude! Whoever put in your stereo should have used the trim piece from the TomTom unit! It is a $100 dollar piece that makes AVIC's look flush to the dash. And the mounting bracket from the tomtom is metal and fits most DD HU's. I would get in contact with them and get the trim piece.
