My tailgate is not closing properly HELP !!!!!!

Hello T4R.com, I just recently purchased a 87 4runner SR5 22re 5speed 4wd from an original owner last week and let me tell you I love this truck, very solid and I feel safe driving it. Ive done the tune-up (caps, rotor, wires, plugs, oil, filter) so the truck is running great and hoping to meet with you fellas for a run in the mountains in the future. When I bought the truck the owner told me that the tailgate doesnt close properly and needed to be "adjusted"? so now the "rear door" warning light is constantly on, the tailgate closes fine but leaves a minor gap on the upper left corner (causing the light to go on and not being able to row the rear window down or open tailgate), my question is has this happen to anyone and how can I adjust it or what can I do? any feedback would be appreciated. thank you

Sounds like the left latch might not be locking. with the gate open, push a small screwdriver into the latch and see if it locks.

I was finally able to row down the rear window with help of another person, open the tailgate, use the screwdriver to test the lock and load and behold!!!!! lock is busted...thank you dingman, now im trying to located another lock, stealership wants 80 bucks, searching ebay, searching classified... is there anywhere else i can find this part??

ive been to three local junkyards and let me tell you, nobody junks these trucks !!! I guess thats a good thing.... anyhow, would a 2gen lock work on a 1gen? ive been trying to located both part numbers to see if they match but not having any luck..

ya junkyards are always hit and miss with the 1gen 4runners. and when you do find one its already been striped clean....:bash:

im still in the process of locating the lock, my last resort will be walking into the stealership, once I locate one I will definitely do a writeup on this procedure, so wish me luck fellas...:awais:

yeah my tailgate is busted too!!!

the back door light is constantly on, what can this be a sign of?

when i bought the car they told me it was the motor, is there anything else it could be?

are there any manuals floating around for a 92 3.0L??

thanks

does it still roll up and down? it could be the sensor on the drivers side latch or the one on lock that tell it when its up or down???

it doesnt work at all, when i pulled the center console off i noticed the wires werent plugged in, when i plugged them in it seems as though there is no power going through the button at all (usually my battery gage moves whenever i use any electrics)

that sucks. mine quit working for a while and i figured out that it was the sensor on the drivers side latch that isnt engaging. i bypassed it by unplugging it and bridging the two outside wires on the female end of the plug.....sounds like the previous owners got a short somewhere and just unplugged it to prevent blowing fuses. ??

oh right! where exectly are these two wires? i have taken apart the drivers side door before, other than the electrics for the windows i didnt see anything else?

My rear door light comes on because I have a busted lock on the driver side which caused the tailgate to not engage with the latch, mine is actually a hardware issue, you seem to have an electrical problem ( if that makes sense) , try MT4runner method and good luck
