my transmission is toast

well today my transmission went for its last mile. i went up to the local mountain to ride and the trans just got harder and harder to shift. then i hit a dip and started clunking.

so i made it to the parking lot and had to push it into a space. let it cool down and drove it home, luckily only about 20 minutes.

it clucks and makes ticking noises, and now i cant get it into 1st or reverse .. it in the grage and the tranny/transfercase/clutch is comming out tomorrow.

hopefully its not to expensive 200,400 miles on it

pretty good i guess

That blows man. How much is a new one?

After I went out playing in the snow my 4runner wouldn't shift into reverse. After about 10 minutes of trying to force into into reverse and park I was finally able to get it. Since then it's shifted fine. Is my transmission going too?

toyota trannys are not a high failure rate transmission, but if they do get hot, or are abused and not flushed every 60,000 miles problems can arise. but once and a while problems do occur where they are pushed and they do wear out

I'm hitting 127,000 and I know that I have never flushed the tranny fluid since I have owned it (~80,000 miles in 2005). It seems to be kind of laggy lately, with a huge loss of power... it's strange to say the least. I'm taking her in to get the flush on the t-tech machine to make sure it's all out, and hopefully it will be running smooth again... then I'll install a tranny cooler and have no more worries for a while. :bigok:

toyota has a tranny cooler built into the radiator... most car do!

its hard to say if you should flush it, depends if it has ever been done before, if it has then the fluid is not truly 127,000 miles old and will not have broken down yet

if it has never been done then if you flush the tranny you will have the broken down fluid pushed into parts is needs free flowing fluid, like the valve body, then it could kill your tranny.

I expect that a rebuilt one will run about $1000. And as for that sticky reverse, mine did that, but If I put it in 1st and rock forward it will go.

I have researched around and my problem could be a clutch but I just put a clutch and transfercase in 25,000 miles ago. So I will see tomorrow.

And I drive my 4runner pretty easy. I try to get good gas mileage. And when this started today I was on a straight road going 50. I don't think I caused the damage

new transmission

I have seen 4runner transmission's for sale on E-bay for 400.00 with a 2 year warranty!

yes i have seen them for 400! with a two year warranty!!!!! i just checked ebay and one is selling for $24.50 but they will not send to a residential house. no warranty.there are lots of them on there prices vary a lot.

How did your trans situation turn out. I got the 5speed and the synchros are goin. . . . Gotta pause between 1st and 2nd. . . And between 2nd and 3rd. Sometimes gotta throttle up to match the elms to shift. Thinking maybe just need a new slave and master for the clutch. Never been replaced. And only about 50-60000 on the current clutch and fly.

I'm at 207,000+ thousand miles on mine and I'm pretty sure its still on the original clutch. The only thing I notice on mine is at first start its stiff getting into first, but once it warms up everything shifts fine. My clutch when I first step on it, only returns half-way. Once I bring it up with my foot it returns normally for the rest of the day.

This is the first I've heard of a 5speed giving it out, hope everything goes smoothly on the repair.

I would change the fluid out to reline shockproof .. I prefer the lightweight version myself. This obviously won't repair a damaged trans, but it usually helps things greatly.

I would give the clutch fluid a flush/bleed seems like the fluid is a little contaminated.

Well this turned out to be a clutch. the clutch plate has the come-a-parts in the bell housing. Couple of the fingers snapped off. had one sticking out of the bellhousing in the little vent . Got a new clutch for free from napa, put it in. probably got 30 K more on that clutch and it was toast. And just replaced that with an aisin clutch and a brand new flywheel a few months ago. Trans is fine at 241K :) did some long trips and it was fine, even when it was hot.

The synchros are getting old. SOmetimes i get a little grind in between 1st and 2nd and in between 3 and 4th.

But other than that it keeps on keeping on

heard that on the 241k miles, i have 212,000 and am moving up quickly. once i get all new ball joints/inner tie rods/outers and 02's, me and my buddy (who has a 1st gen w 230k) are heading to cali from south carolina. taking a few weeks off to explore....

im thinking new master and slave will solve my problems, hopefully. like you said, sometimes you gotta use some finesse while shifting, but ive heard that the r150f tranmissions are stout, and rarely "fail".

Yes, it does, and that is the source of many of the tranny failures: leakage between the radiator and the factory cooler. That's why I had an aftermarket cooler installed the completely bypasses the radiator.

Good thing the pink milkshake doesnt apply to the standard transmission
