My V8 and Magnaflow muffler

OK...it's been on a month and it sounds better everyday.....I have the resinator still on, too. It's killing my gas mileage, but the V8 sounds absolutely fantastic with this muffler. OK, back to whatever you were doing......

I had a Flowmaster on my last 4th over the Magnaflow because I felt that Toyota's were were more tame than the American V8's with exhast and wanted it a little more aggressive. It brought out a deep WOT tone and quieted when under normal use. I may run Magnaflow this time though. It's what I had on my 96 and 2000 with great results. Do you have a sound clip by any chance?

The resonator being on is killing your gas mileage? or is the new muffler killing your mileage?
 
I don't have one but have been meaning to get one. I'm not sure it will do it any justice, though. When I was researching, none of the clips really did it for me. I had a Magnaflow on my older Tacoma V6, and I really liked it....But trust me, it sound awesome....so awesome I'm averaging 14 mpg. I'm a V8 noob. lol
 
Stay out of the gas ha. I think Magnaflow's are perfect for the V6 which is also the most difficult motor to get to sound good and not riced out. I get around 17.5 cruising the interstate to work and back depending on traffic and who's reading while driving in the next lane over. A muffler wont damage MPG's like that but getting the sound out of it will.
 
I average 14mpg per tank also but I do not drive any highway and I feel like the transmission spends very little time in 5th gear - it's actually not bad for a big heavy gorgeous brick shaped vehicle with a burly V8 in it.

I have a flowmaster 50 on mine with the resonator still in. Once the vehicle is started and idling you'd never know it was there, only under load and at startup can you tell.
 
what would removing the resonator change? sounds? mpg? would it be too loud with it off?
 
Ran magnaflow for 4 years. Just started towing a 5000 pound boat around and it sucks! Had a shop put a walker stainless steel quiet flow and its much better under load. Kept the magnaflow tail pipe though.
 
My opinion on the V8 and magnaflow is that the 18" Magnaflow provides drone without the resonator. Maybe I'm getting old, but I didn't like it and immediately had the shop put the stock resonator back on. That took away 90% of it.

However, then I had that ugly resonator back there still. I HATE the way that thing looks on these trucks.

This past week I got a 24" Magnaflow to replace the 18", and had the shop remove the resonator and stock tip, tuck a piece of pipe really tight against the chassis in its place and turn it down at the bumper. They then hit it with some high-temp black paint -- you can't see it and it doesn't hang down past the bumper at all.

The 24" Magnaflow sounds about like what the 18" Magnaflow + stock resonator did. There's a little drone if you listen hard, but I don't think passengers would really notice unless they were listening for it.

All in all, if I had to do it again, I'd have kept the stock muffler on and just cut off the resonator.
 
I was thinking about putting in an x pipe with duel Magnaflow mufflers but I'm not sure my wife would appreciate a lot of drone. What type of sound do you imagine if get by keeping the stock muffler and cutting the resonator out?
 
I put a 30" long 7" round magnaflow.

No drone, no resonator. .. no problems. Little more noise on wot and start up. Now with my 33s @ 65mph on the speedo (72mph) actual, I am only doing 1800rpm.
 
The magnaflow on my V8 didn't drone much... until I tried towing. Pulling my 5000 pound boat on the interstate in 4th gear had my head rattling. I had a shop pull it out and put in a walker dynomax quiet-flo SS muffler. All fixed and it still sounds good without a resonator.
 
I I can't decide what I'm going to do. I may just go cheap and put a single Magnaflow, chop the resonator off and have the pipeccome out the side
