mysterious noise

So, today while washing my car I decided to check under the hood and make sure everything was still looking and sounding alright. I noticed my battery terminals had junk all over them and so I disconnected the battery and gave the terminals a cleaning. I then proceeded to go home and while pulling into the parking lot I started to hear a noise behind the glove compartment. It sounded like a cd player trying to switch cds so I turned off my cd player and still kept hearing the noise. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what is located behind there and what it may be? I thought it may be the ABS? Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions I'd greatly appreciate the advice.

Weird! Mine does this initially when I first turn off the car for a couple seconds and then goes away... Sounds just like a cd player switching cd's. Never stays on for me though.

Power antenna motor.

If I'm not mistaken, the power antenna motor produces a quite distinctive noise and is somewhat loud. I know what that sounds like...however, this noise is kinda faint occurs randomly, not just when I start up or turn on/off the cd player.

Well maybe that's what 98'4runnerSR5 is hearing, then?

Does your antenna go up/down when it's supposed to?

Yeah man, I'm pretty sure that's what he's hearing too. My antenna doesn't go up or down at all...I disconnected it after I installed my aftermarket cd player because a few weeks before I installed it, the antenna kept getting stuck while it was retracted and wouldn't go back back down and I don't listen to FM anyway.....

If you think its the abs, pull the abs fuse and see if the noise persist. I would try messing with the hvac controls to see if the heater box is stuck trying to switch from floor to defrost or something like that and see if you can get the noise to quit. Also check to see if the rear heater fan under the passenger seat is making the noise (if your truck has this). Just a few places i would start checking.

I think the heater box is stuck trying to switch from floor to defrost. I remember now when I was on the way home I switched it from vent to defrost and I almost never touch those controls. Thanks for the help man!

Yeah, Power antenna motor going out is really loud! Happened to my buddies one day when we were in it and it sounded like hell. Mine hasn't worked since before I owned it but doesn't really matter to me cause I don't listen to radio at all anyways. Ipod all the way but yeah, maybe the things getting stuck. I know that's not my problem cause mine switches over just fine... Weird ha hopefully that's your problem! Not concerned about mine cause it isn't anything big and doesnt happen all the time so.

My antenna motors aren't that loud. There's no grinding or anything because the nylon tail is broken off altogether. The motor happily winds up and down faithfully doing it's job each time the radio is turned on/off. But for me it's not loud at all so I haven't bothered with disconnecting it.

Anyway, hope you can get your heater baffle unstuck!
