Mystery Throttle Part

Can anyone identify the part in the attached picture for me and tell me its function? It appeared to be causing the throttle to not return to baseline idle. Once it was removed, engine was able to maintain appropriate idle speed, but maybe I should clean and/or replace it if it is vital to the health of the Runner.

I think that is a cushion plunger that keeps the throttle from snapping closed too quickly. I also think it's sole purpose was to help with a certain part of emissions certification, but I may be wrong about that. It seems like I remember reading that when the throttle closes quickly you get a spike in unburnt fuel due to the air mass changing rapidly, and the only way around it was to slow things down.

It was one of the things that drove the manufacturers to switch to electrically actuated throttle plates (drive by wire).

Personally I'd replace it, because that may not be it's only purpose, but I doubt there's any short term negative effects so I wouldn't be in a huge rush over it.

yep, looks like a dashpot.

im in the process of adding one to my wheeler. if I let of the throttle too quickly sometimes the engine drops to low and dies before it can recover. this would prevent that.

My apologies, but I wasn't certain how to search for something that I didn't know what it was, or something close to what it was, and to an extent it defied description.
