Nail in the tire

i just about an hour ago found a nail in my rear tire which is a bridgestone dueler ht. my truck is new with 1100 miles on it. the nail was fairly thin and bent. it was either in the tread or between the tread about 3/4 of an inch in the rubber. anyway, it was on that part of the tire- not the side of it. do you guys think that this will leak? i did not specifically buy a tire insurance policy (figures) oh well- this sucks- i hope it will be ok. thanks for any input.

ust rotate with with spare and have the stealership fill it with a plug 12$ CDN
screw plug 32$ CDN
either way its repaired and no worries

Town Fair Tire - FREE flat repair

Don't know if you have these stores where you live, but they are really the place to go for repairs. FREEE!!!!

I had the tip of a Philips screwdriver (the replaceable bit type) puncture my tire somewhere between where I work and the bank a couple weeks ago. When i came out of the bank, the tire looked low. I was lucky enough that the screwdriver bit was on top of the tire and I found it by looking and running my hand over the tread.

I was tempted to pull it out, but instead I drove to Town Fair Tire and they removed the wheel , removed the tire, plugged the hole, AND spun balanced it for FREE... I thought it was going to cost me $15 to have all that done, but their policy is to repair any flat tire for free, regardless of where you bought the tires (mine are also the Bridgestone H/T 840).

I only had to wait a half hour for the fix. I was impressed, and will probably buy my next set from them in the future. No problems at all with the plugged tire, the truck drives just as good as before.

that's amazing! it's the day after now, and the tire shows no sign of losing air at all, so i am thinking it didn't go through? anyway, if i need them i definitely will check them out. thanks for the good tip!

I would still go to a local tire place to have it checked out. You would hate to find out later...somewhere in the middle of your vacation.

Most big tire store will fix your tire for free or a minimum charge ($15-20). I have a tire repair kit in my car all the time. So, if you don't plan on going to a tire store, then get a tire repair kit.

Wouldn't it be much better to get the tire patched instead of plugged? I assume you guys are not using the terms interchangably.

The tire might not leak as long as the nail is in it, but if the nail comes out, that's it. I'd get it fixed ASAP.

This happens to everyone. My local Discount Tire has always patched mine for free. If you go to a place that charges for it, it should be $20 tops.

i pulled the nail out last night- and no leak. isn't the steel belt in a steel belted radial going to reasonably protect against that? it was only in about 3/4 of an inch.

I would watch it over the next week...to check for a slow leak.

P.S.: Patch is the better idea...but in an emergency, the plug should work just fine.

1 good way to check it

is to spray soapy water, windex over the area, hope you marked the side of the tire with something to find the hole again after pulling the nail. if it starts bubbling you have a slow leak. Also buy a tire guage and check it twice a day for a few days. if it didn't go thru, i personally wouldn't worry, its happened to me b4.

Yep, Discount Tire pretty much has a policy of doing tire repairs for free in hopes of earning your future business. (it works-- I've always gone to them for tires on my other vehicles in the past)

Beware of any place other than the stealership patching your tires (so says a trusting Toyota mechanic). The tire monitoring system is very fragile and there is an exact way of removing the tire from the rim in order to prevent costly damage to the system.

I picked up a nail @ 170 miles on my new 4Runner and went to Tire Discounters and luckly they didn't screw up the system. BUT they did over-torque the lug bolt and SNAPPED the bolt clean off. After waiting 2 hours for the dealership to deliver a new one, I was on my way.
