Nail in Tire

After 5500 miles I found that I have a nail in my tire. It looks like a 'tack' nail or a roofing nail. Very flat/wide nail head about the size of a penny. If there is any 'good' news about this scenario it is that it stuck into the tread part of the tire and not in between the tread. Is there a problem with patching or plugging the tire? I am tempted to pull the nail out and see whether it punctured all the way through or not. Anybody have any suggestions?

Plugging a hole is cosidered acceptable, if done right. I would take it to a tire dealer you know and have them look at it. When they take the nail out, they will know if their is a leak. If you do it at home and it leaks, replacing the tire yourself is a bear. I had to do it when I got a nail, only way I know to get it to the dealer was to put my spare on. If the nail is not on the side of the tire or on the edge it should be OK. If the hole is too large or anything unsual the tire company should know. Some compaines will do it for free, in Atlanta, Kauffman tire will do it for free. When I went to Goodyear and gave them my Firestone tire with a nail in it, the cost was $18.

If it is deep in there, they'll just plug it up... Usually only costs about 5 bucks or so.

I had the same problem and took it to my local chain tire shop, "Town Fair Tire" and for a few books they removed it, plugged it, and gave it a water test to make sure there aren't anymore leaks.

I got a nail in my tire at about 6K, but it was on the edge of the tread. They tried to use a patch-plug but as we thought it was too close to the side wall and had to be replaced.

Actually, if you get the Toyota dealer to do it, it might be more. If there is no hole, I am sure they will charge a lot less. I think the point most of us are making, if you go to a Tire dealer, they see this all the time, they should fix it, you don't have to change the tire and it should not be a lot of money. My tire dealer that charged $18 was right across the street from where I work, the dealer that does it for free in Atlanta was miles away and I didn't want to wait to have it fixed.

Hopefully you will not need a new tire like Mom.75 did.

The proper repair is a plug and a patch (it's called a mushroom - think about it). The plug keeps the moisture out of the steel belts, so they don't rust, and the patch prevents air leakage. When I'm driving @ 75 MPH, I don't want to have to think about the quality of a tire repair. $18 is cheap for peace-of-mind.

think positive. hopefully it didn't go in too deep. roofing nails are not very long and hopefully that tread is nice and deep.
