Name that noise

Hi everyone. I'm new here, having recently bought a '99 4R sport edition 4x4. (I like the 99s since my 4x4 Taco TRD from the same year is on 205k miles w/ regular maintenance).

The truck had 103k miles on it and I put on 7k miles in 3 months. The previous owners had it since new and they babied it. I have all the service records.

Occasionally, maybe once every 2-3 days, when I start her up there is this loud noise coming from the engine which sounds like the throaty/gurgling sound you make as you are about to hack up some phlegm. It is continuous. Normally I kill the engine and start it up again, then it usually dissappears.

Problem is each time I take it to my mechanic buddy to get checked the noise never comes up.

Any idea what it might be?

I know that on my 4Runner, everytime I start the engine, you can hear the ABS pump pressurize.

The sound could be described as you said, but it's not what I would call loud, and it only lasts a couple of seconds.

If I could hear the noise, I could give you a better idea of what it is.

hahaha thats funny, i know exactly what your talking about, thats happened to me alot, the problem not showing up when the mechanic is there thing. now onto the noise, does is sound harmful like its hurting something/someone? or does is sound like its stressing the engine?
