Name Those Off Road Locations!

I searched the forum and couldn't find any thread that was about general off road locations. I thought it would be a good idea to list locations that you know of; both legal and illegal(without trespassing private property)! Name the state, county, town, even the road name and locations its near if you want. I just think it would be a good way to get some more 4Runners on the trails. This is because even if people have the time to go 4-wheeling, they simply don't know where to go. Also, if you have some pics and descriptions of the trails that may help too. :lookout:

I have pics of my offroad excursions on the Offroad Idaho thread...Dans Ferry Service, Melba Idaho...Co. BFE...Left out of gas station over bridge around s curve I believe its the first paved road on your right...turns to dirt past dairy over cattle guard...past atv/dirt bike park about a mile second gravel parking lot on left for people that trailer, across the road starts carnage canyon and from there stems other trails like meat grinder, dirty little secret, teeder toder, red zone (must have right built rig and big balls) ect...If your in Idaho just put Dans Ferry service, Melba Idaho in your gps it will get you to the gas station....just pack out what you pack in and make sure you have a full spare, compressor, plugs and bring someone with a wench...

Oh and if you care about body damage not the trails for you...

Check with your local state park service, local BLM office, etc, they may have a map of off-road parks.

I just did a the Squaw Peak Trail here in Utah county up Provo canyon. Go up squaw peak road and take a left at the fork and follow that road for about 20 miles and you'll come out in hobble creek canyon...some of the most beautiful places ever! Utah is the best place to go offroad.

Most areas have off road clubs. A lot are geared towards Jeeps, but as a former Jeep owner most of the guys I knew were pretty open to taking any vehicles along as long as you have some recovery points.

As far as illegal off roading, why??? This is the kind of crap that gives all of us a bad name.

If you have issues with NOT having enough legal trails in your area maybe you should consider getting involved in land use issues.

Check out the Blue Ribbon Coalition, Tread Lightly, or find one of the websites ran by Del Albright.

Let me just clarify something. By illegal i mean some trails off into the woods that technically you're not allowed in but is not really enforced. For example there are a few scattered around Hackettstown NJ that many people go to and off road and is the source of many mud-covered trucks in the area. Me and a buddy were about to go into one when a cop drove by. He basically said we were unlucky to be seen by him so he had to say something. then he said once he drives away he "hopes" we dont go in. this is all while he was smiling and laughing. then he drove away and said "have fun guys." My point is 'illegal' as in un-named, unwatched locations where you're technically not supposed to be but if you get caught you will just be told you're not supposed to be in there; you won't be slapped with a trespassing fine or anything. And yes I would definitely discourage people from trespassing and going on private property and things like that.

I would also like to point out that quite a few police officers wheel these "illegal" trails when they are off duty. :biggrin2:

Illegal is Illegal. we need to create a positive image of our 4wheeling community.

so this makes it "ok" ??? if a police officer was to commit a robbery, would you do it too ?

that wasn't exactly the point. I've seen Jeeps, 4Runners, a Landcruiser, a few fords and others on these trails. these are very well-developed trails. Maybe 'illegal' isn't the appropriate word to describe these trails. I don't mean name some guys back yard that many people go tear through on the weekends. They basically don't want people getting hurt in there. And i assure you it has nothing to do with destroying wildlife or preserved land or anything. I am absolutely for avoiding things like that. Like i said, maybe illegal isn't the word to describe the type of trails I'm talking about.

There's a thread in here somewhere- trying to get a trip together on Oct.1st to go Rausch. Rausch Creek Off Road Park It's in Pa.. Be nice to have some 4th gens with us..

I think the point is my grandpa has 40 acres of woods that my cousin and I and close friends wheel in all the time. But, if some random group of people just stopped by and started wheeling there on his private property just because they saw us pull out of there all muddy is just not cool. Private land is private for a reason. If you see trucks wheeling hook up with them and ask who owns the land and get their numbers so if you go you can just verify that it's all good. Granted we wouldn't really care if people went back there but it's good to know. My 2 cents. Otherwise stick to public lands. BTW on that subject anyone know the ruling on powerline trails? I know some sweet powerline trails here that there are tons of tracks on. I know they are technically the utilities property but i'm pretty sure they don't check them often if ever. What's your opinion on that?

Most of the off road clubs here are predominantly jeep too but they are open to any capable offroad rig....and they know lots of good trails :thumb3:

Actually the trails I mentioned are all powerline trails. They are public property but are still technically illegal because the town doesn't want any damage or for people to hurt or kill themselves out there, from what I heard anyway. So I hope this clarifies what I mean by 'illegal'. I am definitely not recommending anyone wheel on someone's private property.

Well open to the public physically...they are very easy to access but you aren't allowed to go in according to the towns and counties; even though many of these locations are rarely watched if at all.

Washington State? Where are you at if so? Lot's of ORV parks, Forest Service and State facilities, etc... I'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction.


As for the OP. The best bet is to check if you don't know the answer. If you are interested in an area, find out who owns it and whether or not they care about you being there.

Also, seek out an off road club or regional forum. Chances are they are aware of areas you are not, and maybe they know a private land owner who allows you to drive around their property. I've learned more about trails and met more people by connecting with local groups.
