Napa new 1.8kw starter is a OEM knockoff that can be repaired with OEM Denso parts.

So the new starter I had as an emergency spare failed just like the last one did. Solenoid stopped pulling in.

The starter looks exactly like the OEM Denso. So I removed it to see what was up. Trying to start it didn’t even klick.

Pulling the contact cover and removing the plunger I found this:

A dry scored up plunger.

So I pulled the plunger out of a spare I had and measured the barrel diameter and both were the same. So I installed that plunger with some grease into the new failed starter and used the contact cover off the old spare because it’s shape matched the profile of the plunger head and pushed the plunger farther down into the coil.

Bench tested the coil and it works again.

So some of the knock offs aftermarket parts use the same templates as the oem. Good to know. I could see the starters and alternators being this way for sure. Thanks for sharing...

Starter is doing great in 95f degree weather. I’m confidant enough to remove my hammer and prybar.
