Nav buttons not working

Need help with the factory nav on my '07.

I just bought it last week but since getting it home, it appears as though the Map/Voice button, Info, and Scan buttons don't work. Ever. The Dest(ination) button works sometimes but not all the time. Everything else seems to work okay - no problems with with the steering wheel buttons either. I've disconnected the battery but that didn't help.

I've searched and searched through this forum but can't find anything or I'm not using the correct terms, I suppose.

Thought about taking it to a dealer here in Omaha (bought it at an independent dealer in Des Moines) but I'm sure they'll just say "it needs a new one."

Love this 4Runner, its my first, but this has me bummed out. Well, the loose sunroof that rattles too, but let's start with the nav.

I can't remember, is this a touch screen system? Have you noticed sort of random buttons being selected in certain locations on the screen IF it is a touch screen?

Yeah, its a touchscreen but I haven't seen any random buttons being selected in certain locations on the screen.

The buttons don't feel like they are jammed either. They have the same touch and feel as the others but they don't do anything.

Well this may not fix the issue, but we see this from time to time with the TouchScreens. Take a plain business card or very thin laminated card (thinner than a credit card) and run the card between the screen and the bezel of the Nav Unit, also around the crevices where the bezel meets other sections of the trim if you have enough room. Sometimes debris can get caught in those small cracks and create some tension causing the screen to be engaged when its not meant to.

I had a 2013 Prius V with Navigation have a similar issue (his was that none of the buttons would work sometimes and sometimes the touchscreen randomly selected stuff by itself), the tip-off was the customer kept complaining that when in radio mode Pre-set #6 would always be selected (bottom left corner of the screen.) I found a small crumb/debris had lodged itself between the screen and bezel and when the customer hit a bump it would flex the screen enough to make the Nav unit think the screen had been pressed, which coincidentally disables the physical buttons; the system doesn't like both being pushed at once.

With your issue I'm not so positive that might be the problem (but it wouldn't hurt to double check) as only some buttons don't seem to work. The only thing I can think of is possibly that the buttons aren't making good contact, if you can get a can of compressed air, maybe try blowing some air through the cracks in the buttons and see if that may loosen up some dirt/debris? The other likely culprit is that the buttons may be a bit worn out (which isn't common, but I have seen it with higher mileage/more frequently used vehicles), mainly because those seem to be typically used buttons; in that case you will probably need a new head unit as I don't believe we sell individual buttons (I may be wrong.) But in that case I would upgrade to a newer, better system than the factory unit.

As for the Sunroof... That's a whole other can of worms to go into, I am with some people who say "if you can get it to stay closed and never make noise, do it and rip the controls out of the vehicle and never even look at the sunroof!" Those things are just money pits with a ticking time bomb attached in my personal opinion.

The buttons you describe are "hard" buttons. Did they work before you purchased your 4Runner? Anyway, have you tried disconnecting the battery? Maybe it somehow got "stupid". Can't hurt. At least you can discard that by doing this.

Sunroof? Yikes, there is a TSB on it and some have fixed it by themselves. Helps to be very handy. When they go (break), it can suck. The cars in my family always had a sunroof since I can remember. Never had a sunroof fail. Yet. (knock on wood).

Tried a business card in the crevices but no luck. I don't have any compressed air on hand but I'll give it a whirl when I can.

As far as the sunroof goes, it doesn't rattle all the time but but way more than I want it to. The whole thing is loose when I press up on the glass itself from the inside. There's just a little bit of play there that seems to cause the rattle. Doesn't appear to be leaking though I've only had it a week and haven't washed it but there's no signs of any previous leaking.

Frustrating because my '02 Maxima with 150k miles has a perfectly working sunroof to this day. No rattle, no leaking - perfect.

Good news! The Info button started working yesterday. Hopefully that trend continues today. The Map button is still dead though.

Do the buttons just pry off with a tiny screwdriver? Thinking about popping off the Map button to see if something got spilled in it or jammed in there.

cant you clear or reset it with using the key after the car is already started? As if acting to start the car because the starter wont engage once already started and that clears the radio errors? Or am i thinking of something else?
