You'll need to obtain the updated map disc through the dealership. It's about $300 for the update. It's possible the updated disc may not have any changes for your area.

Never...it's too costly.

Not promoting anything illegal here...but there are "ways" to get them...
 
anyone had any luck (or even tried) making a hybrid DVD (older, unlockable firmware paired with the most recent, updated maps) to unlock the 2010's Nav so you can set destinations and dial from BT phonebook while moving?

Sorry, I left out a word in my post above.

The updates come out yearly. IIRC, typically around October.

The dealer should have a bulletin that will be able to tell you what areas have been updated--usually it's not a lot. If you live in a metropolitan area, there probably won't be any changes worthy around town by getting the DVD map update. Conversely, if you're in an area with a lot of new developments/communities, the DVD update could add new street names or routes in the area.

A friend of mine lives in a new development/community. He was providing me turn by turn directions on getting to his house. I told him, I have navigation and I just need the address. He responded, even Google Maps doesn't have his address and street name. On my '06, the map has the streets/roads of his development/community, but name of the street isn't there.
 
I was getting service done today and decided to inquire about getting the navi updated since I have noticed several addresses that do not show up on my navi. The parts guy said the CD costs $250 and I couldn't order it via phone and could not have it shipped to my house and it would take 2 weeks to deliver to the dealership. I think I'll pass and use my Iphone for any addresses i cant find on the navi. IMO, this should be a free service if you buy a car with a navi package.

I 100% agree.
 
I've only used the nav a couple of times on my '11 LE. I previously just used my Droid / Google Nav. Comparatively speaking, the Toyota OEM Nav sucks. What a waste of $1400.
 
When looking for my TE a month ago my dealer warned me about buying the Nav said it was not worth the extra money better to buy aftermarket GPS based. said Kenwood,Pioneer, Alpine was the way to go.

Yep. You just pull out the old DVD and load the new one. It adds additionala roads, POI's, etc. You won't lose anything in terms of your address book, pre-sets, etc.
 
All factory automobile Nav systems are outrageously priced — buy an iPhone and you get decent navigation (for the few times most of us really need it, unless you're in sales) and a zillion other things for half the money. Automakers will eventually stop charging so much because there is now a proliferation of far cheaper alternatives. It's just like Bluetooth, which used to be about a $1,000 option, yet now is mostly included.
