nav question

I just located an 06 4wd sr5 with the options I wanted except the nav. I was told that most if not all sent from the factory to the dealers will most likely not have this option on the sr5. Does that sound right? Also can the nav be purchased an installed aftermarket just as oem and if so would this not be more expensive to do this way. I was really wanting the nav with the bluetooth on the 06 but wanted the sr5 and not the limited.

The navigation system is not an option on the SR5 or Sport Edition, but you can purchase the factory navigation system and install it yourself.

Believe it or not, buying the navigation system and installing it yourself will be less expensive than if you bought the system factory installed.

Ever considered just buying an aftermarket nav system? I added an Eclipse 5495 to my SE, and I absolutely love it. It's harddrive-based so the instructions and routing is fast. There's also a jukebox feature that allows you to rip CDs onto the harddrive so you don't need the physical CDs anymore.

All I'm saying is consider it. Factory-installed units are great but you're basically tied to a particular model and features. With most aftermarket units, there are a plethora of options and accessories available if you need them. For instance, when I'm ready, I will definitely add a backup camera to my nav unit since it support it.

Thanks for the quick reply's. The toyota website is not clear on the options. In one area they show the nav being available for all models. In another area they do not show the nav available for the sr5. Can anyone recommend a good nav system that would fit the 06 sr5. I want one with the bluetooth feature as well.

Very expensive. With the price, you can upgrade from SR5 to LTD w/ NAV given rebate of $3000.

I just bought a 06' SE without NAV, and am having it added as a dealer add-on. The dealers (at least here in California) use the Eclipse AVN 2454 (which is a dealer/wholesaler only model) It is basicly a stock unit except the buttons are a little different.

It does support your steering wheel controls, it is rear back-up camera ready, and has a seperate output for a sub-whoofer. It does allow you to upgrade the stereo at a later time if you wish, with amps, speakers, and a sub.

Do a google search on "Eclipse AVN 2454". Keep in mind though, that if you go to Eclipse's website, that model is NOT shown, as it is a dealer add-on model only and not available for the general public anymore.

I will post pics when I get the truck back. They are adding leather and NAV, I should have it by Friday afternoon and will post pics this weekend.

The NAV was $1,800 installed and the leather was $1,600 installed

True. To tell you the truth, I only got it after realizing what a POS the stock radio was. I love the DVD and jukebox features - they really sold me on this unit. Wish Eclipse had some software updates for the CDDB option though.

Exccellent choice. The Eclipse AVN 5495 is the high end one. Better than DVD running stock NAV. You have the $3000 rebate any way as long as you bought V8.

My dad's vehicle is with DVD based NAV and cost a lot more.

I picked up the 2005 Eclipse product line brochure from my local car audio/alarm shop and found that the AVN-5435 is the new and improved version of last year's model, the AVN-2454, which you are talking about as a dealer add-on. Just thought you would like to know, since you are buying last year's model for about the same price as this year's. I was quoted $1550 for the unit plus another $150 for install labor (and I may install it myself since it's plug and play - Fujitsu Ten makes Eclipse AND the Toyota Nav system). The AVN-5495 is the top of the line upgrade above the AVN-5435. Main difference is the 5495 has a hard drive for saving music and all the NAV info. The 5435 is cheaper and has the dual-disc slot for the DVD map disc and your music disc.

By the way, noserider, the 06s do have NAV as an option so if you want stock, they should be able to order or find you the exact vehicle you want.

Thanks abin. I would recommend that if anyone does decide on the 5495 that they really try and find a floor model to play around with. There are a few things that I don't think Eclipse had thought through or hadn't fully completed before they introduced it into the general market. All in all, they're minor annoyances, and I would still recommend it to anyone looking for an all in one unit.

One major advantage to this years units is that the map DVD is a later version. I understand that the update costs $300.

Make sure that you purchase from an Eclipse dealer or the warranty is void! Units are a couple of hundred dollars cheaper on Ebay but you are betting the unit will never fail.

I looked at the Crutchfield web site. It say the 5435 is not compatible with the 06 sr5?

Crutchfield says it's not compatible because of the way it fits in the dash. That is not true. The 06 dash is basically the same as the 05 dash, at least as far as the stereo goes. There is a company, Scosche, that manufactures trim pieces to close the end gaps when you install the 5435 unit. Other members on this forum have used them and they look very clean.

Thanks for the info. Does this unit have bluetooth. I'm not up on all the nav techy stuff yet so please bear with my questions. I really just learned of bluetooth and how it can mute your stero when a call comes in with hands free operation. Will this unit do this as well? I'm in Houston but thanks for the offer to help with install.

That unit, I believe, does not have bluetooth. Unless you get an OEM nav unit from Toyota that is for the 2006 4runner, you won't find bluetooth built-in. I had my parrot kit installed by an audio store here in Cinci and they were able to use the mute wire coming from the radio harness to mute the stereo when I place the call or receive a call. Really awesome. I may take a video today and show it on here if anyone is interested.

Hope it helps. I would get the new Parrot Color LCD kit when it comes out in about a month...Really nice unit, and it is supposed to be able to work with any car manufacturers stereo.
