Navigation associated with XM?

I am not impressed with the XM radio so I will not renew the subscription after my trial offer, but I don't want this to effect the navigation. Are these separate systems? Appreciate the info!

Even if the navi info was through Sirius XM, which it isn't, you'd still be able to only have the navi and not the radio. That's how it is in my wife's Acura.
 
The only wireless data your unit uses comes through terrestrial HD radio stations, generally found in larger markets.

Your apps run though a configured blue tooth device with data plan.

Nav map updates use USB outlet.
 
Someone else may be able to verify, but isn't the Nav. system's traffic information delivered through Sat. radio service? That may be the only thing linked.
 
I think the weather and traffic Info in entune are not delivered through XM. I didn't renew my XM subscription but I'm still getting the traffic info. However, thr traffic Info in my Acura IS delivered through XM so I guess they don't work the same way.
 
How is GPS data obtained?

Does the Entune nav system access satellite GPS data (not XM), cell phone tower data, or ...?

And is there a separate GPS or compass that feeds the compass display on the instrumentation?

GPS simply feeds coordinates, map data is stored in your head unit, and manually updated through your USB port.
 
a lot of manufacturers also use Sirius XM for traffic/weather data but i believe toyota uses HD radio?...which only works in major metro areas but thats really where traffic data matters most anyway.
it is nice knowing that if a highway you're planning on using for a long road trip is closed that Sirius traffic would alert you to that on your unit where cell sig and HD might not be avail...but thats a rare problem.

I did not renew XM and still get the other Entune features just fine. Just be aware they will hound the S out of you to renew your XM.

Right. I have a handheld Garmin (older than the hills) that captures only satellite data to compute coordinates. And I have a cell phone that used assisted GPS, computing coordinates from cell tower locations and satellites. Sorry if I was imprecise.

So what is the source (or sources) of coordinates used by the Entune nav? Is Entune tapping into the cell tower grid, just as the Safety Connect system does? (And as a bonus question, is there an external antenna for GPS system?)

And is the source separate from the data source for the compass display? I suspect that compass display is just a magnetic compass with a digital display.

Like your Garmin, the head unit in your Toyota has an internal GPS receiver, the antenna is located above the rear hatch of you 4Runner. The source is the 24 satellites developed and maintaned by US Dept of Defense . . . No subscription required

Entune doesn't tap into the cell towers, but can be configured to use your cell data plan to run apps.


Your compass is a separate electronic device.

[MENTION=114376]Mooney[/MENTION] Thanks for the info. I thought some people on this forum had written the shark fin was for XM only, but I guess it has other uses.

Overall, I've been disappointed with the Entune nav, mostly because the data it uses is not current. And sometimes "wrong" is not just a nuisance, but worse than no data at all. I've been giving the Entune Nav a second look the past couple of months in travels from Montana to New Mexico, but find that in head-to-head competition, even the Google maps route guidance from my iPhone, mounted on top of the Entune stack, is much more reliable.
