Navigation display question

Hi,
Just had my 2011 Limited delivered last week and trying to understand some features of the Nav display. I realize this is an option not many folks have or want, but I thought I'd ask about it anyway.

I noticed that when the vehicle is in motion, certain navigation features are inhibited (points of interest database is inaccessible, blue tooth features are limited, etc.). I was told by a friend that this was common in a lot of car companies to "limit" their liability (big surprise there) - the theory being that you're less likely to crash if you can't search for stuff (never mind that you might have a passenger that could do it). So in other words, if I'm going down the interstate and I want to stop for McDonald's or something common under the "dining" tab, I have to first pull over and stop to see what's around!

He also mentioned that this so called "safety feature could be turned off somehow, but that it's not written in the manual for obvious reasons.

Does anyone know about this or how it can be turned off?

I don't know if it's the same with Toyota but I know with Subaru there's a wire that tells the nav when the vehicle is in motion. You have to disconnect that cable and reroute something so the nav isn't disabled.

I've only used the voice control for my phone - I haven't tried it on the nav - but I believe if you press the button on your steering wheel you can say, "destination" then vocally input what you are looking for.

It is kind of odd where the limitations lie - You can't use the nav feature but you can search your ipod or radio no problem when moving.

Thanks. Just read that pdf, and while that procedure may work on the Toys too, Im not that savvy about wiring. I was hoping it was an on/off switch hidden on some diagnostic page. Well, I'll ask around the electronic shops. I also tried using the voice command feature as you suggested, and it works, but it's also limited in the amount of selections it gives you (guess they don't want you talking/thinking too much either!).

Yes, they let you do what ever you want from your ipods, etc. because they don't/won't take liability if you're using other products that are plugged in. That just proves they're not interested in safety, but only care about what THEY can get sued for! Oh well, Im' sure someone will know around here how to get around that. Thanks again for the reply!

The short answer is that lots of smart people on here have tried different options and if my memory is correct, no one has been able to override these features on our trucks. If you do a search, I'm sure you'll find threads on this dating back to late '09.

I'm sure someone will figure it out eventually, but I don't think it's happened yet.

Personally I prefer giving voice commands... why type/push buttons when you can just tell it what do when you're in motion.
