I have tried to search, but maybe my keywords are off so I'll describe the problem and if anyone knows of related threads or has some suggestions, it would be appreciated.

The Problem: On a recent trip up to Los Angeles our Nav system in our 2006 4Runner started showing us on the map where we weren't. At times the marker had us anywhere from a few hundred feet to almost 10 miles off the route we were on.

About a week ago it had my wife driving in the ocean.

Anyone else having issues with the GPS. We had as much of a view of the sky as you can get and haven't seen this until just recently (last two months).

The only thing I have ran across is when I am on a new road that does not exist on the map and the vehicle icon on the NAV screen will "jump" to the next closest road. However this only seems to occur if another road is parallel to the one I am on and about 1000 feet or less away. Otherwise it just shows I am not on a road.

On one occasion the NAV showed I was on a road one block over that ran parallel to the one I was actually on. In this case I believe the road I was actually on was programmed into the NAV with the GPS cordinates slightly off. Bad programming might be part of the reason you had your issues. Have you been to the area previously and the NAV worked OK, except for the time you speak of above?
 
Up till the time I described it was fine. And not only was it say a few hundered feet off, it would literally jump around. For about 30 minutes we were driving every which way, and then it would settle on a road, and then switch again.

Once we stopped and turned off the car it got "calibrated" again. I chocked it up to a freak occurence, till my wife said she was driving around the Pacific Ocean.
 
My parents Lexus had that happen on the nav one or two times. The dealer said if it happens often, the system has to be replaced. It never happened on my 4Runner though.
 
Interestingly, we had it happen last night. We spent most of the time driving in the Pacific Ocean. My 10 year thought it was cool.

We're heading in for our 10,000 so my wife will have the dealer take a look. I figured it was a system thing and not necessarily the sats.

So how well did the 4Runner handle the ocean?? And did you have the snorkel on? :D
 
I've been dealing with this for 4 month with my 06. Just got the replacement (new, not refurb) last week. If anyone would like to know how to get this problem fixed ASAP, give me a call at 843.200.0122. Otherwise, just going through the dealership will take months. It's not the dealership's fault, they can try anything. It's a problem with Denso and Toyota North America. This process was infuriating for me, and I will help anyone with the info i have learned so that others will not have to endure the same.

BTW, the only way to fix this is to REPLACE the system. Antenna replacements and resets DO NOT work.
 
So I decided to stash my handheld GPS in the glove compartment for the next time it happened and it appears the trucks coordinates it's "receiving" are incorrect.

Which eludes to the last posters comment on having to replace the system all together.
