Navigation is a joke

I find old fashioned paper maps, road atlases, etc. are easier to navigate with, and I travel a lot for work. For specific addresses I will use google maps, but then refer back to the paper maps to get me to the google point.

That is up to you. It is your trip. I look at a paper map too as I mentioned above.
People should also know the direction they are going and not be completely ignorant to the process. If you pay attention to road signs it is helpful. They usually have N, S E or W on them. If you know you should be going one direction and the signs show differently then you might want to verify what you are doing. Like my told me, don't trust anything. Let's use our brains a little more. I have made wrong turns using paper maps too. It happens.

I find myself reading some of these posts and I'm like "are you people ****ing stupid?". A paper map and half a brain should tell you instantly that you are going out of your way in strange areas. Blindly following a nav system without double checking it first is retarded. And blindly following a nav system when you already have personal firsthand knowledge of the correct way to get somewhere and then complaining when the nav routes you on a longer route AND following that route instead of aborting? WTF?

Back before GPS was really a thing and phones were for phone calls, Mapquest and similar sites were big. I can't even count how many stupid mother ****ers would flag me down and ask for directions, while waving a Mapquest printout - and they were in the wrong town, in some instances, several HUNDRED miles away from where they wanted to be. People's blind faith in fallible things is ****ing incredible.

Blindly following a nav system without double checking it first is retarded. Paper maps are all fine and dandy, but they are a mite bit hard to use while driving and certainly do not offer traffic updates with the ability to reroute on-the-fly.

Welcome to the forums. The internet can be a rough crowd. :welcome:

I think most people can agree that the OEM Navi isn't the greatest, but it's kind of expected given that most OEM Navigation is not reliable. The only OEM navigation that I have used that is good is in a Mercedes GLC. But thats a different price bracket, in a different segment of vehicles.

I know its frustrating, but your best bet is a separate device (Smart phone, Garmin, etc.). Best of luck!

If you are not worried about data, get Waze. It maps pretty well, and has other useful features to notify you of hazards along the route.

If you are worried about data, Use Google Maps. The app now has an offline maps function. You can select an area that you want to be downloaded to your phone (using a wifi connection, if you are really worried about data usage). Once it is downloaded, routing info works using the GPS, not data.

I do use the Entune navigation system occasionally, and agree with the comments on here about its value. Does anyone know what company is actually supplying the maps to Toyota? There are so many errors in street locations in the colorado mountains, yet Bing, Google and most other providers seem to get it right...

The topic, your topic, is the usefulness of the navi system, right? I respect that you are successful enough to pay cash for your car and own a BRICK house on 65 ACRES of land. One thing I do like to use the nav for is traffic reports. I'll use it to let me if I need to take back roads or not.

Toyota is making a big mistake by not adopting CarPlay/Android Auto.

I just purchased a new DD car and it has CarPlay, it's probably a must-have for me now. Apple/Google maps is far better than any stand alone car maker's NAV system.

Looking beyond the insults what I see him saying is if you are depending on the nav system to get you where you want to go you are ****ing stupid and retarded...That's pretty much the point I was making without being so offensive..

One benefit of the paper map era was that users often knew when they were off course. Now it seems easier to disregard the warning signs.

Had Toyota told me part of your what your $48,000.00 buys is a navigation system that has state highways in the data base but does not direct you to use them, but instead directs you to stay on Interstates even though it adds 2 hours to a 4 hour drive I would not be complaining..

You're complaining about a completely trivial component of an excellent vehicle. Kind of ridiculous. I never had an issue with my navigation on my 15 sr5. So either it is operator error or you are missing some kind of map update.

I guess we can agree to disagree about the value of the navigation system..I would not describe the navigation system as a trivial component..I would describe the windshield washer as a trivial component..I think you are mistaken about what you say must be either operator error or missing map update..And so does the dealer..
