Does anyone know of a way to unlock the navigation so you can enter addresses, and access your contacts while driving? My M6 BMW comes unlocked, and can use it while driving, but Toyota has it locked.

Anybody know why European cars come unlocked, and Japanese locked?

Last thing if there is no option, can anyone recommend an aftermarket head unit? Pioneer? Kenwood? Alpine?

Unintended floormat acceleration can be thanked for this. First item on a service or predelivery inspection has floor mats listed as more important than oil level, brake pad life or even radiator coolant condition.

I think you can talk to the Destination Search app lady and change addresses on the fly. Destination Search is the Entune app that connects to the GPS on the head unit.
 
This has come up before and I think you're SOL for making changes while in motion. It's a save yourself from yourself safety thing and an anti liability Toyota thing. Considering all the texting while driving accidents it appears well founded.

There are also threads out there where people replaced their head units including reviews and install info. Search for those for info. I haven't changed out mine; nor have I subscribed to any of the updates. This is partly due to all the entune problems mentioned here as well as no need for the Nav really. We've been on a couple of trips and a map works just as well!
 
BTW another option is a hand held GPS. You can put it in any vehicle and some come with free updates for life (not sure if it's you life or the GPS's life).

I tried sending the following to you through the "Contact us" link on your website, but it could not go through:

I followed a (maybe dated) link from the T4R Forum regarding the navigation override/bypass module in the interest of purchasing one. I had been able to go into the menu hidden behind the volume screen to override, but lost that capability when my last map dvd upgrade evidently changed the firmware, too. So, I no longer need to hit the "nanny button" to start the navigation, but I cannot go in and select the override that was in the original factory setup for my 2006 Sport Edition. Is the module no longer available or, if it is, how would I order one and what would be the cost?

Yes, you will lose the ability to access the hidden menu when upgrading past Ver 5.1 I believe. Sorry we no longer produce these for sale. As the 4th Gens aged the demand for these tapered off so we stopped making more. To make it worth my time I had to produce these in batches and they were taking to long to get rid of. The website lists in detail exactly how to DIY.
 
The voice control works great when entering an address on the fly. You don’t need to override the system. Using the voice control to enter an address is easier than trying to enter it by hand while driving.

I recently installed the nav bypass using the anytime backup camera harness. Its just a simple addition to the wire harness (pin 17 if I remember correct). I use my own switch/wires and hid it above the USB outlet on the underside of the dash. Seems to simply shut off the GPS signal and works well for entering locations then switch it off and GPS works as normal. Just takes a few seconds to update the location. Only used it a couple times.
