The nav color (white - daytime or black - night time) is not dependent on your headlights... its controlled by an interior light sensor (like the one that automatically turns your headlights on). When I drive in rain, I typically turn the headlights on and the nav screen doesn't change to black. I agree with heygenius - sounds like your dash lights are set to their highest setting and you seem need to move the tumble switch back a bit.
I had this problem. Check the dash light switch. If it's turned all the way until it clicks, the nav won't switch to night mode. If you back it off just before it clicks, it should work fine./
I can't figure out why when I turn my headlights on, the map on the navigation system won't switch over to "night mode".
Is anyone else having this problem or do you know what I could be missing?
(2014) My problem is that when traveling, I often will run with my headlights on. In my case, the nav screen will go to "night mode" with headlights on and bright sunlight. Then I can hardly see anything on the screen. The only time it will stay in "day mode" is if just the DRL are on.
Also have a 2014 Rav and the screen stays in "day" mode even if the headlights are on..................???

I did find it........."Settings", "Display", "General", The turn the headlights on.
The display will then show "day" or "night" mode. It will only show with the headlights "on", otherwise the mode will not be shown.
