Navigation Traffic Question

Is there a way to have the 2020 and after Navigation systems avoid traffic jams or provide alternate routes around traffic jams?

I recently installed a 2022 Nav system into my 2015 4Runner and am learning the new system. I hit a traffic jam yesterday and did not see a way to do this though.

This is an interesting question. When you input a destination and are presented with the 3-route option, the choices are Quick, Short, and Alt. I think that the Quick route takes traffic into account. But the Nav system will not dynamically change the route when new traffic incidents crop up. It will, however, notify you when new traffic incidents occur on your route, but I think the broadcast traffic info that the system receives is only updated every 15 minutes. It’s not crowdsourced and constantly updated like the Wayz™ app.

I suppose if you were being guided on a route and received the Accident Ahead notification, you could cancel the navigation, and then re-enter the destination from the Recent Destination screen, have it recalculate, and then you would choose the quickest route and perhaps avoid the recent traffic incident. This of course depends on weather the nav system takes the traffic info into account when it calculates the routes.

Do you have Carplay (Apple or Android) and a smartphone or tablet with cell service that you can use instead?

In-vehicle nav systems never seem to be able to keep up with Apple/Android nav apps. Ask the owners of various makes whose 3G head units were just disconnected by the shut down of the 3G cell network.

Apps for cell phones will get updated more regularly and reliably than any in-vehicle nav, even the ones that are in as many cars as Toyota.

The 2022 should have a traffic display. Mine has a way to display traffic, but I have not yet had a chance to play with it. You may need an owners manual for your 2022 navigation system.

They absolutely do dynamic navigation and re-routing due to traffic, but it all depends on whether or not the incident you ran into was reported/updated by whatever system they use.

I don't remember if there's an option to turn that on or off in the system settings though. It's been years since I used that system anyway, just use apple CarPlay and the mapping app of my choice.
