I bought a 2008 limited 4runner without the navigation packge. Will Toyota install the navigation after the fact, or if not is there a good in-dash navigation package that's fits the 4runner?

The factory Nav that only costs about $1,000 as an option will cost you about $4,000 to buy it after you bought the vehicle. And they will try to charge you another $500-$1,000 to install it. (How the hell this works out, I have yet to figure out. I just laughed at the tech that told me this.)

You can find some decent after-market NAV's by searching this forum for around a grand.

Otherwise, get an Eclipse unit and it'll be plug and play. The interface of the Eclipse maps are almost the same as Toyota's. Eclipse's parent company Fujitsu-Ten manufactures the Toyota OEM nav.

Not anymore... Fujitsu sold the ECLIPSE name to JVC. Thats why they all look cheap now. The old ones, ie 5440 5441 etc. Thats when eclipse was #1. They arent what they used to be at all.

I don't know where you got the info that Eclipse is now owned by JVC, but I believe that's very incorrect. JVC and Kenwood are in the process of merging. You can go to the Kenwood site and they give little merger updates if you are interested.

The Eclipse decks (from what I've read) are plug & play if you don't have the JBL system. The OEM navigation systems offer many benefits over aftermarket, especially the newer 5th gen units. If you are more interested in playing video and adding amps, etc, then you may want to go aftermarket.

Installing an OEM unit isn't really too difficult. The E7008 is the 5th gen OEM unit for our 4Runners. If you get an E7009, which will work fine, you can also get a replacement front panel piece to change the switch illumination from green to amber. I've had an E7009 installed before and didn't care for the funky difference in dash illumination. Then got the E7008, then went aftermarket because I don't like all the safety lock-outs while in motion.

Hey 1BadGixxer, I'm not trying to get into a pissing match here or anything, but I don't believe that to be fact. If I am wrong, I am wrong. I'll be the first to admit it. But I can't just take someone's word that something is fact when all information I've found in print to say otherwise. Please school me if I am wrong, but give me a link with the information as well.

I don't have a tax ID, but as a side biz I've been installing, buying, & selling mobile electronics for the last 10 - 12 years also.

I recently did a lot of research on Fujitsu-Ten because I was trying to find a common link between them and Denso, who is apparently the new manufacturers of the 5th gen nav units for Toyota. I was curious because the navigation lay-out & software appears to be the same as the Eclipse units, however they have the DENSO label on them. I actually found no link between them.

Basically, I think if you make a list of features you want and what's important to you (bluetooth, voice-recognition, factory look, PRICE, etc), you'll be able to narrow down units that you want.

Make friends with Crutchfield.com. They sell a lot of various products, and have a lot of info about each.

Also, the SEARCH function does wonders. Search the forums. There is a lot of info about installing nav units on this site, & our sister Toyota sites. I've started a topic with other web sites you may want to visit in the General Discussions.

Maybe JVC just bought in on it... I'm not sure how much or what the deal actually was,. All the guy said was eclipse isnt what it used to be because JVC bought them and is now manufacturing them. Also, I already stated that the nav systems have minimal changes, maybe they didnt want to change the higher end. I do know this... I asked my guy to try to find me some 5400 series units and he said, good luck. They will never be what they were. This isnt gospel, just hear say from the distributor.

I had a Eclipse avn5424 in the Titan... Outdated IMO. I'm putting the Kenwood DNX7120 in the 4r... I'm DieHard Eclipse/JL Audio, but the kenwood looks real nice. I had the oportunity to play with one and was impressed.

Timely thread... I was just thinking of replacing my Scion HU with a nav unit.

Some question to all... will all double-din (4-channel) nav HUs be a straight swap in the non-JBL 4runner or are there issues I should look out for (I'm planning to install myself... the scion swap was easy enough).

I'm also wondering whether the steering wheel controls will still work with any aftermarket nav units. I know you can get a pAC adapter but proper compatibility would be preferred.

1. To use bluetooth, you need to buy a module from parrot. This module had a thing you have to stick to your dash that has the buttons for answer/hangup.

2. There is no way to have a button display on the screen to answer,

3 There is no caller ID that appears on the screen.

I emailed back and forth with their tech support, and the guy said there are 'rumor's that these features might be added next year.

So I'm waiting to see what happens, if they still don't have these things updated. I guess I'm going to go with one of the pioneer units, and have to spend the extra to get the steering wheel controls to work.

I agree 100%. I know a lot of people don't mind the parrot units, but I can't believe Eclipse hasn't come out with either an add-on unit for BlueTooth, or come out with a unit or two with it built in. I really think they are missing the boat.

They aren't the only ones missing the boat either. While shopping around for a unit to install in my truck, I came up with one big conclusion. I am very disappointed with the selection out there right now. There were flaws and faults with every brand unit I tested. Maybe I'm just too picky, but years ago when I had my Alpine system, I loved it. It did everything I wanted it to. But now it seems even Alpine has gone down-hill in my book. Again, maybe I'm just too picky.

I think if aftermarket manufacturers like Alpine, Eclipse, Clarion, etc, that design OEM systems as well would make their aftermarket offerings more like the OEM units it would be nice for everyone. Alpine's systems designed for Honda & Acura are sweet. Clarion's units designed for Nissan & Infiniti are sweet too. And again, the units designed for Toyota are awesome.

If I could find an aftermarket unit which had built-in BlueTooth, a 4-disc changer built in, and the mapping details & features as OEM, I would be a happy man!

The Pioneer F units are great on paper but their screens are not great from what I've seen. Kenwood units seem to have better screens, both from a contrast and sensitivity perspective. In both cases i don't think the adapter for steering wheel controls is too expensive.
