Your question prompted me to call Toyota about updating the map datum stored on DVD. Toyota told me to contact my local dealer who told me that they don't expect to see an update for the 2003-4 DVD disc for about another year. Updates to 2001-2 systems ran ~$250! My t4r-04 w/ NAV is already out of date here in CO for many areas as roads keep changing and are being added. For the most part it's still very useful and I rely on it heavily.
I suppose a better system would be a RAM based system vs. ROM that dynamically updated map data via satellite. I expect this sort of system will eventually be available and will improve the NAV to include current road construction information and more accurate and comprehensive POI.

Thats odd my Nav system automatically updates the roads, you ask how do I know this well with all the road construction it is always dead on where the road is with the exits, how it does this I don't know but their is 1 or 2 areas that I was sure would have got thrown off but the Nav updated it by itself, a place where they switched the highways to opposite sides after 20 years my Nav readjusted and is fine, weirdest thing but my only problem with the Nav is it has a glitch in it sometimes where it will lead you in a circle and anything with an address does not auto adjust.
For a Nav system it's pretty bitchin especially since it seems to not have a problem with all the road work.

I have a few highways near me that the highways structute changed or small roads were added within the last year or 2 and everything is updated.
A rotary or circle (NJ has a bunch of them) was removed and my nav has it correct.
My only complaint has been with street numbers. If I am looking at a POI at 500 main street, it will take me to main street saying you arrived at your destination but I either have a few blocks togo or I already pasted it. When I have the POI icons up, it too is off sometime by a block or two.

Since the only ram installed on the NAV system is for audio channel tabbing and calendar items I don't see how any updates to map datum can occur.
Additionally, GPS satellites do not deliver map datum, only coordinates and the Toyota DVD GIS is proprietary and stored on read-only DVD so I can only conclude you're imagining about your maps updating themselves. Mine sure don’t. Now if you’re referring to dynamic re-routing that’s another animal and has nothing to do with the content of static data on your DVD. To suggest otherwise would imply that the US government and Toyota worked out a collaborative effort allowing Toyota access to US Government satellites for map datum uploads or that we suddenly have a standard for map datum. We don't, GPS technology is not there yet. For now we have to rely on DVD-ROM updates for our Toyota NAV systems which unfortunately do not happen very often.
However, other sensors in the GPS system do work with the triangulation of the GPS satellite signals when signal is lost. Perhaps what you're seeing are these systems in action but you're not seeing updates to your map datum via satellite

Just giving you an idea of how it updated itself, I live in Rockland and they just moved 2 highways on the other side of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Cross Westchester Expressway was on the right and was moved to the left and I-287 was on the left and then moved to the right, I had my truck for over a year before they moved the 2 highways to opposite sides and the Nav system has all the roads exactly as they lay before and after the construction, say what you want but if I put in directions even the voice commands lead me in the right way after the construction.
I don't know how to explain it but even the roads at the airaport that are constantly rearranged are somehow updated with the Nav
I don't know about Toyota working with the Govermant but I heard they where in good with NASA:arrow:
