Tint question for you all in NC..

i'm moving to NC from FL (a state without vehicle inspections) and i'm wondering how strict they are on tint? I currently have 20% on the fronts and i'm thinking about going darker, but i read that the law in NC says 32% is the darkest?

Do they care when you take your truck for inspection? Thoughts?

As far as getting it inspected with tint, most places care. I've heard of people finding places that will inspect if you slip them some extra cash but I'm yet to find one of those places.

Depending on where you live, cops may or may not care. I had 20% on my front windows for close to a year and never had any troubles. I finally had to take it off and go with 35% (legal tint) up front when I was due for inspection because I couldn't find anywhere that would do it. I asked the tint shop and my local stereo shop who would inspect and they said everybody around here was scared to inspect illegal tint. I'm located outside of Charlotte.

I have 35% over the factory 70% so I'm close to the legal limit (might be slightly below it), but I haven't had any trouble with inspections. I've read that you can also just roll down your windows (and take the fuse out) during your inspection to pass. I've never had trouble with police either and I've seen may people driving around my area with about 15% up front if not darker.

thanks for the info, sounds like i should just wing it and hope they don't say anything... if they do ill have to change it to 35% :(

Hey so you have 35% on the fronts and the back? We are actually moving to Raleigh, do you know of a good tint shop there?

Thanks for the input! Also, if you have time i'd LOVE to see pics of your truck.

They're cracking down on this around here. I want 20 percent put don't want to spend the cash just have to rip it off.

I moved from FL as well and was surprised by how seriously they take the tint laws here. I took my previous 20% car to a Jiffy Lube. Usually the more high volume inpection places have more to lose in an audit - I had one shop who would not pass me b/c of the tint. They are strict about it here and I've heard plenty of stories about people having to strip their tint after being pulled over.

I had to peel the tint (20%) off my wife's car to pass inspection here back in 2001. I was not a happy camper. I've got 35 on the front windows of her car, and some 20% on the back side glass. I've not yet done her back window (total pain compound curves).

on my lx450 ive got 20% on the fronts (to sorta match the rest of the factory tint), and was expecting to fail. They passed it and didnt say a word about it. If you find a good inspection place, dont post it on the web, thats what the auditors look for....

good luck...

oh a couple other items youll be interested in that you dont have in fl....Personal Property tax on vehicles, boats, just about anything they can tax you for.....State Personal income tax of roughly 7% or so. Thats in addition to federal taxes. Research the area you want to live in (and ask around here) to see which cities have the highest tax %, and if the area you are looking at is already annexed, or looks like it could potentially be annexed. Our house taxes doubled when we got annexed into the city. And if you already have a job up here, look at traffic patterns as a consideration on where to live. Some folks lose 2-3 hours a day commuting across town...

Coming from the people who make Florida their home that means nothing :lasercannon:

Only joking, Florida is a great place if you are over 75

If your not doing anything to attract attention to yourself youll be fine. I have 5% over 5% all the way around and ive been stopped once for my tint in the last 6 years and other stops, non tint related, have never had it mentioned. including DWI checkpoints. I am fairly confident you will be just fine. What city?
