I don't think any dealership near me even has a Volt or any plug in hybrid car. It would be useless here with how spread out everything is.

That and no filling stations. We do have Volt and Leaf...but rarely seen. Regular Prius is quite popular though.

When traffic is at a standstill and the HOV lane is moving at the speed limit, my wife will take any privilege the state will give her.
I no longer have to commute so none of that matters to me.:biggrin2:And thanks for reminding me that I'm surrounded by libt@rds.

Hey everyone, quick up date.
After doing some test drives and getting 5 internet quotes, (interestingly the range in prices of the quotes was $1,500!). I picked up a brand new 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE with the convenience and leather packages in Cypress Pearl (4 miles on to odometer). Last Friday. I think I got a good deal on it, below invoice and 0% financing for 60 months.
Anyway, so far I am really, really happy with it. It's not an exciting car, but that not why I bought it. Very smooth, quiet and comfortable and great mpg.
On Monday, my first round trip commute of 110 miles, I averaged 40 mpg. This morning on my less highway route, I got an excellent 46 mpg! I'll post some photo later, but so far I am very very pleased with my purchase. If it has the long term durability and dependability I am expecting it's going to be the near perfect commuter car!

I would love to say it's my great negotiating skills and that I wore the dealer down, but that's not the case. I did it all via the internet and got 5 quotes from dealers. 2 of them were just below invoice. I think it was just the timing. Lots are filled with 2012 Camry's and the 2013s are a month or so away.
Here are the 5 quotes I got from the dealers with the MSRP of the vehicle they were quoting. The pretty much were all Camry Hybrid XLE with the same options, some had floor mats and wheel locks, etc. so the discrepancy between the MSRPs

I went with the second lowest quote because they had the color we wanted in stock while the lowest price one didn't. I got them to knock another $310 off so pretty much paid $29,200

110 miles driving EVERY day?
That's an easy one, Sir. Get a used Buick Verano for $18,000. Consumer guide rates it 8/10 for quietness while the prius get a 5/10 rating and I quote, "Road and wind noise are modest for the class, and the V model's 17-inch tires produce a bit more noise at highway speeds. The gas engine sounds gruff as it revs, especially at full throttle."
I think theres a huge difference between a 5 and 8 rating and you'll enjoy the quieter cabin for sure. You won't feel as tired when you finally reach home or work.

BUT, original poster got the new Camry Hybrid, which should rival Verano's serenity and gets 40 mpg vs mid-20s for Verano. In addition, maintenance costs will be lots lower and resale value will be much better with Camry.

Wow...that sounds like the perfect engine!! No urea tanks.
My only concerns are reliability and durability. SkyActive technology sounds great on paper...but so far, the SkyActive gas engines have been lackluster to say the least. And since these are new engines, they have not stood the test of time. And this is fairly new way of designing engines...so, i am a bit cautious about long term reliability.
BUT, if Mazda has found the perfect compromise, then i am all for it!!
