Hey all. I'd like to pick up a soft top for my 86. I found a guy on yota tech who makes them so I shot him an email and haven't herd anything back. Is there a company or someone reliable who makes them? Thanks

For the money, you can't go wrong with the Softtopper.
I priced around and I love mine. I hardly ever roll the sides down.
After I put the soft top on, the hard top just sits in the back yard. It will never go back on the truck.
I'm giving the old hard top away if anyone wants it :)

I went with softopper back in march. Ran with it all summer and loved it. Couldn't find anything to complaints with it. The temps have been steadily dropping up her in the NE so I threw the hard top back on. Can't wait to get it back on.

During the summer I did a lot of up and down with it and after you become accustomed with it, it literally takes a few minutes to have it up/down.

Ok here you go,,

1) Can Back Most expensive $$$$ Little bit of a wait but its the best.

2) Killer Toy Tops and Soft topper. Depends on how you roll.. The KTT is nice and can be done in lots of colors. Price is in between the Can Back and the Soft topper. I liked it because I could remove the sides completely. There were a few issues but I took care of those. The wait time could be long due ONE guy custom making these is his basement. I had mine for two years and loved it!! Even drove it on a 10 hour trip and no issues.

The Soft topper is Cheapest and you will get it fast. I know a few people who have this one and its nice. I just do not like the way it folds down.

If you are really luck you can find Kayline but you have to screw into the body. I do not like that. None of the above require that.

hope this helps.

Thanks. It looks like KTT is no longer making tops.

Which leads me to Can-back or Softopper. Has anyone used a new Canback from Truck Candy? I 'd like to know if there is any difference in quality between the originals vs the new. I like the Softopper design, but the occasional leaks from owners concerns me. Kayline is not an option with drilling- my rig is way too nice for that.

I know KTT was taking a break in making them.. but I did not know he would be stopping. I have not heard of anyones soft topper leaking..

Softopper on my '88...........

Looks like Can-Back is regarded as the best! I thought so too;
but, went with Softopper which is no slouch either!! $$$ vs. $$ ; no holes to drill for either! Softopper was very easy to install and works big time for me! It might come off in a tornado 'tho! :happens:

I, too, was looking to get a soft top, and was seriously interested in the Can-Back. And then I saw this:

1st Gen. 4Runner soft top...

$1,400 is a LOT of dough to spend versus Soft Topper's one for literally half the price.

I contacted Truck Candy at the end of last year, and spoke with a gentleman that stated that they were "in the process of finding another vendor to sew the canvas tops". Seems that the original Can-Back and today's Can-Back are two entirely different species. Personally, I would be concerned about working with a company that outsources their labor, versus a manufacturer that does everything in-house (i.e., the original Can-Back manufacturer).

I don't know about you, but for $1,400, I would expect the top to be perfect. If you do decide to go with Can-Back, please post a review for all of us. If they've got the kinks worked out, maybe I'll order one, too.

:iagree:

Mine does not leak, and I have had it in Florida's sun & strong thunderstorms for years.

Who said theirs leaks?

I wonder if anyone has contacted Softopper about the fabric leak?

I have had NO leaks, seams or otherwise. Of course, my truck has never had snow piled up on it ( Florida ) but it has had some frost.

We get some wicked rain storms here, and again, no leaks.

I put the Softtoper on in August of '08. The hard top has not gone back on since.

@redriver- thanks for the photos- mine is white and its nice to see a clean example of what it would look like.

I am leaning toward softopper. I wonder if they would do a group buy. Anyone interested?

If you can get enough people for a groupbuy, I'm in!

I rock the Softopper in Montana all year round! Winter temps, ice, snow and all! No problems, no complaints at all! With the sides and back rolled up there isn't much annoying wind on you. Very nice on the highway even! No flappy noise or anything. I got mine only days after ordering it. I got the extra rear "screen window" as well. I love this top! I also am giving away my hard top to anyone willing to pick it up!!
